Comments from head coach John Fox at his weekly day-after-game press conference following the 41-9 win over the New York Giants:
ON WIDE RECEIVER STEVE SMITH: He had surgery (Monday), and it was successful. He will start the rehab process.
ON SMITH'S RECOVERY TIME: Right now, as far as I know, he's day-to-day. He had good surgery. I don't even think he's out of the hospital yet. I'll let you know when I find out more information.
ON WHETHER SMITH WILL GO TO INJURED RESERVE: Probably more than likely. I haven't really officially done that yet, but it's in the making. And no, I don't know who we're signing yet (to take Smith's place on the 53-man roster).
ON SMITH TAKING AN ARM-BREAKING HIT AND STILL SCORING: He's a pretty tough individual. The ball was taken more inside to the safety, and I think he got his arm up to (brace himself) for protection. It looked like he took the blow with the helmet. His finish on the touchdown was pretty unbelievable considering that he had a broken radius.
ON WINNING RESOLUTELY THE LAST TWO WEEKS WITH A STARTING QUARTERBACK, RUNNING BACK AND TWO TACKLES INJURED: That's why you play the game -- to win. You get dealt the cards you have. The upside of it is that it gives guys that you picked for the 53-man roster -- guys that were acquired off the street or on the roster (all along); we've run the whole gamut thus far -- an opportunity to do this for a living. Most of these guys do it because they love it. To see these guys get an opportunity and have success is definitely rewarding.
ON QUARTERBACK MATT MOORE'S PERFORMANCE SUNDAY: He played well. I think he's gotten better each week. He's gotten more comfortable managing the game. I think there's certain things he's more comfortable at doing that we've had to tweak a little bit, but he's gotten better each week and I think he'll continue that.
ON WHETHER MOORE SHOWED ANYTHING SURPRISING ONCE HE BECAME THE STARTER: No, it's like most backup quarterbacks in this league -- you never really know until they start playing. He had a little bit of playing time; I think it's been well-discussed. But like any position -- whether it's ![]()

ON USING MORE ROLLOUTS WITH MOORE: I can't get into specifics; it's just an area that I think (allows him to) see the field and be comfortable. He's got good feet. All these guys have good abilities; he's got the size, the arm strength, a lot of the tangible things. The things you don't know are the intangibles, and I think I've seen him grow with every start, whether it was two years ago or this year. Obviously he doesn't know, so there's things that we do that he has a comfort level with.
ON HOW MOORE WOULD STACK UP FOR NEXT SEASON: I knew this would come up, but I'm just worried about next week -- really, tomorrow first -- and then as we get ready to play the New Orleans Saints, what the week after that brings. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. We're going to do our best to get him ready to play against the New Orleans Saints.
ON RUNNING BACK MIKE GOODSON: I think he's got a bright future in the National Football League. He's got some God-given abilities that can have him stand out. Now it's just a matter of harnessing that and getting the reps and getting better as a football player. He's made some good plays. He caught a swing pass for a first down. He did a decent job returning as far as a kick returner. All things that I think he'll just continue to grow and get better. He's a unique young man that I think is just going to get better and better as we move forward.
ON WHAT GOODSON MUST WORK ON THAT MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO HIM BEING INACTIVE MOST OF THE YEAR: Sometimes it has nothing to do with what they're doing or not doing. It's a numbers game. We're only allowed to suit up 46; we're only allowed to pick 53; we can only start 11. At some point it's the numbers. We have a 53-man roster and we've run the full gamut. So eventually guys get an opportunity, and it's up to them and they're responsible to be ready when that happens. Mike has gotten some opportunities and when he's gotten them he's taken advantage of them. I'm sure he'll do the same this week.
ON WHETHER WIDE RECEIVER KENNY MOORE WILL START FOR SMITH: We'll see how the week's work goes and see who's available on Wednesday and go from there. But there is competition every day and in every way, so we'll kind of see that as the week's work goes on.
ON IF RUNNING BACK DEANGELO WILLIAMS MIGHT PLAY SUNDAY: Yeah.
ON RUNNING BACK JONATHAN STEWART'S 206-YARD DAY AGAINST THE GIANTS: I was very impressed with what Jonathan did. He had a lot of help but he made some things happen on his own, too. I thought it was a very good effort from our offensive standpoint. Jonathan has done that two weeks in a row now where he's had more of an opportunity to run the ball, and he's stepped up big. It was a big game for him and a big game for us.
ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE DEPTH WITH NEW STARTERS BERNADEAU AND SCHWARTZ: That's why we do this. I think (offensive line coach) Dave Magazu and (offensive coordinator) Jeff Davidson have done a terrific job developing some young guys as well as the players being accountable and dependable guys. They've worked hard. They've probably gotten more of an opportunity than we really planned. But that's the good news about when you have injuries - you do get some young players some added experience and live game reps. I think they've done a superb job - both the coaches and the players.
ON FULLBACK BRAD HOOVER GETTING CARRIES AGAINST THE GIANTS: He's a great competitor. Brad's always been a dependable a guy, whether it's been as a blocker or even as a runner as you saw yesterday. He likes to play the game, he's had an outstanding career, and we appreciate him.
