Panthers announce practice squad

Posted Sep 6, 2010

CHARLOTTE – Six players waived by the Panthers on Saturday rejoined the organization Monday as members of the practice squad, and Carolina rounded out the squad by adding a pair of guards to bolster their offensive line depth.

Back in the fold are wide receiver Trent Guy, running back Josh Vaughan, fullback Rashawn Jackson, cornerback R.J. Stanford, defensive tackle Corvey Irvin and linebacker Sean Ware.

The Panthers also signed guards Shawn Murphy and Dan Santucci.

PRACTICE SQUAD
POS PLAYER EXP COLLEGE
WR Trent Guy R Louisville
DT Corvey Irvin 2 Georgia
FB Rashawn Jackson R Virginia
G Shawn Murphy 3 Utah State
G Dan Santucci 4 Notre Dame
RB Josh Vaughan 1 Richmond
LB Sean Ware R New Hampshire
CB R.J. Stanford R Utah

Guy, a product of West Charlotte High School, suffered a hamstring injury during training camp and only played in one preseason game versus Tennessee -- catching one pass for 8 yards, returning four punts for 5 yards and bringing back one kickoff for 37 yards. He had a nice punt return negated by a penalty.

Vaughan ranked second on the team in rushing in the preseason, with 75 yards on 23 carries, and he also caught three passes for 18 yards. Jackson got a single carry for 3 yards in the preseason.

On the defensive side, Stanford had seven tackles in the preseason, and he forced a fumble in the preseason finale Thursday at the Pittsburgh Steelers. A seventh-round pick out of Utah in the April draft, Stanford was the lone draft pick out of the 10 the Panthers had that didn't make the 53-man roster announced Saturday.

Irvin, a third-round pick of the Panthers in 2009 who spent last season on injured reserve, and Ware – an undrafted rookie – had four tackles apiece in the preseason.

Murphy and Santucci, the two new additions, should give the Panthers more options up front after two guards – C.J. Davis and Duke Robinson – went on injured reserve Saturday.

Murphy is the son of former Atlanta Braves star Dale Murphy. The 6-4, 315-pounder was a fourth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2008 and was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles in May.

Santucci, a seventh-round draft choice by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2007, was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday. The 6-4, 304-pounder played two games as a rookie with the Bengals, then spent '08 and '09 on injured reserve.

Each NFL club may carry a maximum of eight players on its practice squad. Practice squad players may not play in games without being signed to the 53-man active roster.

Players who are eligible to be signed to the practice squad include: a) free agent players who have not yet earned an accrued season of free agency credit; and b) free agent players who were on the game-day 45-man active list for less than nine regular season games during any year in which they earned any accrued season.

However, a player may only be eligible to participate on a practice squad for up to three seasons – with three or more weeks on the practice squad in the regular season or postseason during each of the first two qualifying seasons and one or more games during the third qualifying season.
