Panthers trim roster at deadline

CHARLOTTE -- The Panthers met the league's roster limit -- and then went two further, trimming their complement to 51 players Saturday night by placing defensive tackle Corvey Irvin on injured reserve and releasing 23 other players.

"We have two spots open that we can fill if the right people come across," said general manager Marty Hurney.

"I think we made the decisions there and we decided we were going to have two spots there and look to fill them. There's a lot of reasons, but once we make those decisions, we believe that we just go ahead and do them."

Roster moves in the day after the 53-man deadline are fairly common; last year the Panthers made one such acquisition by signing wide receiver/kick returner Mark Jones, who had just been released by the San Diego Chargers.

Waiver claims are a possibility to fill the last two slots.

"We won't know until we see the waivers tonight," Hurney said. "We'll look at (the list) tonight. If there's any claims to put in, we have until noon (Sunday) to put them in.

"It's hard to comment on what we're going to do until we see the complete list and see who's out there.

One of the 23 players let go was defensive tackle Marlon Favorite, who worked with the first team for a spell early in training camp after Maake Kemoeatu tore his Achilles tendon. The release of Favorite and fellow rookie George Hypolite and the injury to Irvin leaves the Panthers with three players listed at defensive tackle, although Tyler Brayton and Charles Johnson have experience rotating to the two inside defensive-line slots.

"Marlon certainly is a good player; he's young and was improving all the time," Hurney said. "Right now we just felt those three that we kept were the three we wanted to keep on the 53 and we'll just see."

The move of Irvin to injured reserve ends the third-round pick's reason before it began. Hurney said the rookie tore a medial collateral ligament Thursday night in the 21-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"He's going to be out for a while," said Hurney, adding, "I thought he played well the other night."

... The Panthers did not waive anyone who played for the team during the 2008 regular season. Five players from last year's practice squad were waived: running back Decori Birmingham, defensive end Casper Brinkley, safety Joe Fields, wide receiver Kevin McMahan, and offensive lineman Jonathan Palmer ...

... Every draft pick stuck with the Panthers in some capacity, with Irvin going to injured reserve and all others making the team. All of the Panthers' draft picks from the past two years are still with the club. Thirty-three of the 51 players on the roster were originally drafted by the Panthers ...

... Offensive tackle Garry Williams was the only undrafted rookie to make the roster ...

... Carolina kept two fullbacks: Brad Hoover and fourth-round rookie Tony Fiammetta.
