CHARLOTTE -- For the second consecutive year, the Panthers will open their preseason on national television.

That August-opening trip to Baltimore -- which will take place at 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday, Aug. 12 -- and consecutive home games against the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans highlights the four-game slate, which was announced Wednesday afternoon.

A trip to Pittsburgh closes the preseason in customary fashion. The Panthers and Steelers have met in eight consecutive preseason finales, alternating venues -- at Pittsburgh in even-numbered years, at Bank of America Stadium in the odd-numbered ones.

While the Steelers are a familiar summer foe, the Jets and Titans are on the Panthers' preseason docket for the first time.

Specific dates, times and ticket information for the last three preseason games will be announced later in the spring.

... The Ravens game gives the Panthers a nationally televised preseason game for the fifth consecutive year. Two of the games were on Fox (Miami in 2006 and Philadelphia in 2008) and one was on CBS (New England in 2007), with the appearances of last year and this summer airing on ESPN ...

... Two of the preseason games will be reprised in the regular season -- against Baltimore and Pittsburgh. The Ravens will visit Charlotte in the regular season, but the Panthers will return to Pittsburgh. This will be the second consecutive season in which the Panthers have played road preseason and regular-season games in the same venue; Carolina faced the New York Giants at Giants Stadium last August and returned there twice to face the Jets and Giants in November and December, respectively ...

... This will be the sixth time in 16 Panthers preseasons -- but the first since 2006 -- that the entire schedule has been comprised of AFC opponents. The Panthers played nothing but AFC opponents in August from 1999 through 2001 ...

... This is just the second time in Panthers history that the team has played a pair of preseason games bracketed by road games; the other came in 2004 ...

... The Panthers head into the summer looking to snap a five-game preseason losing streak, the second-longest in franchise history behind a six-game skid in 2000 and 2001 ...

... The early start to the preseason means the Panthers have the option of getting an earlier jump on training camp.  Teams cannot hold their first practice until two weeks before the season opener, which forced the Panthers to start on a Monday last year -- two days later than they did in 2008 ...

... All 20 teams that finished the 2009 season with an 8-8 record or better got at least one nationally televised preseason game.  Everyone who finished 7-9 or worse did not.  There are 11 prime-time, nationally-televised games on ESPN, CBS, NBC and Fox this preseason; the only teams with multiple appearances are the Cowboys and Bengals.  Not coincidentally, they play in the Hall of Fame Game, making them the only clubs with five preseason games this year.
