Draft

CHARLOTTE -- Carolina dealt to go defensive Saturday.

The Panthers traded their 2010 first-round pick to the 49ers for the No. 43 overall selection and a fourth-rounder Sunday. Carolina used the 43rd pick to select Florida State defensive end Everette Brown, who hails from Stantonsburg, N.C. Sixteen picks later, the Panthers took Troy cornerback Sherrod Martin, shoring up a position that absorbed the loss of Ken Lucas a month earlier.

For a rundown of how the day went, follow the updates below.

4 p.m. EDT: The telecasts are on the air, and we're off and running at the latest draft-start time in NFL history.

4:23 p.m. EDT: The Show-Me state represenatives took their time with their selections; both the Chiefs and Rams went well past the nine-minute mark before turning in their cards.

4:41 p.m. EDT: ... and Sanchez puts on the Jets hat. The trade and pick has slowed the pace a scosh.

7 p.m. EDT: Donald Brown, from the University of Connecticut and Atlantic Highlands, N.J., is smiling on the phone. The Colts take him. For what it's worth, Brown is from the same area of the Garden State that gave the world Clerks and a myriad of other Kevin Smith movies.

8:21 p.m. EDT: Panthers are on the clock ... trade with the 49ers. Panthers on the clock, No. 43 overall.

8:22 p.m. EDT: THE PICK IS IN ... Florida State defensive end Everette Brown. He was looking mighty forlorn on the broadcast in recent moments, but since the call from the Panthers, he's turned ecstatic. He'll also get to stay close to home; he's from Wilson, N.C.

Here's what we wrote about Brown in our draft previews:

Second-team All-American and first-team All-ACC selection last year ... Third in the country and first in the ACC with 13.5 sacks in 2008 ... Also led the conference in tackles for losses (21.5) ... Had 23.0 sacks, 46.5 tackles for losses and 100 total stops in his four seasons at FSU ... Ran the fourth-fastest 40-yard dash time among Combine defensive linemen (4.73 seconds) ... A product of Beddingfield High School in Wilson, N.C.; he was rated as the state's No. 5 prospect in the 2005 class by Superprep magazine.

8:29 p.m. EDT: The Panthers still have their No. 59 pick, which should be coming up in the next hour.   Carolina surrendered its first-rounder next year and picked up the 49ers' this year (No. 111 overall).  This pushes the complement of Panthers picks in this year's draft back to seven.

Back in the draft, we're on pick No. 50.  Nine to go to Carolina's original slot.

8:48 p.m. EDT: Still buzzing here in the media room at Bank of America Stadium.  When Brown talks, we'll have quotes and notes right here.  Plenty coming on Brown -- and whatever else remains for the Panthers tonight -- so keep checking this space for updates.

9:06 P.M. EDT: Notes from Everette Brown's teleconference with Charlotte-area media:

... "If I had one team I wanted to come to, it would have been the Carolina Panthers." Talked about going to a Panthers game against the Saints when he was 14 years old. "All I remember is the excitement I had going to an NFL game, getting there early and coming up to the edge of the stands, watching the players warm up." ...
... Went to high school in Wilson, N.C., but says that Stantonsburg is his hometown ...
... His wait was spotlighted on ESPN, which had a camera on hand. Brown described the process as "stressful" but said he was "very calm." "I just wanted to play football again," he said ...
... He says he feels comfortable playing either side of the line ...
... He watched Julius Peppers play basketball and run track when he was younger. Peppers and Brown are from nearby towns down east ...
... Said he did not talk to the Panthers between the Combine and last Sunday, when Panthers scout Mike Szabo got in touch with him.

9:12 P.M. EDT:

9:24 P.M. EDT: Panthers are on the clock at No. 59.

9:29 P.M. EDT: The pick is in ... the Panthers select defensive back Sherrod Martin from Troy with the 59th selection.

From the Panthers.com draft preview:

All-Sun Belt first team in 2008 after notching 90 tackles and four interceptions for the Trojans ... Missed the 2006 season after having surgery on both shoulders; in spite of the injuries, he logged 78 tackles the previous season ... A first-teamer since the second half of the 2004 campaign ... Had the ninth-best 40-yard dash time among Combine safeties (4.52 seconds) ... Posted a 36-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, three-inch broad jump; those ranked sixth and 11th, respectively, at his position.

9:50 P.M. EDT: General manager Marty Hurney just wrapped up his press conference. Among the highlights:

... The team had a first-round grade on Everette Brown. "We said coming in that if he was there at a certain spot, we would try to get him," Hurney said ...
... Said that they started working on possible trades after the second round began, and that they talked to "several" teams about a trade ...
... On whether trading next year's first-rounder is a calculated risk: "Sure it is -- every time you do it. I think you do it for players that you think can come in and help you right away. When you look at giving up next year's first-(rounder) for a guy like Everette Brown, you look at it (as) you have him for a year, and then he's that much better in 2002, and we had him as a first-rounder this year. I think he will continue to get better every year, but he does have the ability to come in and help us right away." ...
... "One of our needs was pass rusher, and we felt Everette Brown was one of the better pass rushers in this draft," but added that he can be an "all-around" defensive end ...
... Praised Brown's intangibles, particularly his work ethic, and said he will "work in the rotation" with the rest of the defensive ends.

10:32 P.M. EDT: Befitting a player who will be asked to make the transition from safety to cornerback, Sherrod Martin decribed himself as "versatile" on a conference call with Charlotte-area media.

He spoke of how he worked at cornerback at the Senior Bowl, and said that by the end of the week he was comfortable at the position after encountering some difficulty during the early-week practices. He also said that teams had talked to him about playing all over the secondary -- cornerback, safety, nickel, etc.

That will bring an end to the ongoing updates. A final wrap-up story is coming later, with video and photos. We'll be back with another running story tomorrow; until then mahalo, gracias and merci beaucoup.
