CHARLOTTE – Linebacker David Nixon will be the newest member of the Panthers, pending him passing a physical on Friday when he reports to training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.
The addition of Nixon will provide depth at the linebacker position as the team enters training camp. Three of the nine linebackers already on the roster –
Nixon, who participated in the Panthers' three-day rookie camp as an invited tryout player in May, has played for three different NFL teams. Undrafted out of Brigham Young in 2009, the 6-3, 225-pounder has seen action in 15 games for the Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans and St. Louis Rams.
In another pre-training camp transaction, the Panthers have waived running back Armond Smith. Carolina had claimed Smith off waivers from the Cleveland Browns on May 15.
