Newton named NFC Offensive Player of Week

Posted Jan 6, 2016

Quarterback Cam Newton matches Tom Brady for the most honors in a season with five.

CHARLOTTE – Stop me if you've heard this before: Cam Newton has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

It's the fifth time Newton has won the honor this season, tying Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2007 for the most such honors in a given year. It's the eighth time Newton has won the award in his career and the eighth time a Panther has won a weekly honor this season – both team records.

Newton, in his fifth season, tied two NFL career records in leading the Panthers to a 38-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday's regular season finale. Newton rushed for two touchdowns to bring his career total to 43, matching Steve Young for the most by a quarterback in league history. Newton also threw for two touchdowns, allowing him to match Young with 31 career games with a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown.

Newton completed 21-of-26 passes for 293 yards in the victory, which improved the Panthers to 15-1 and wrapped up the No. 1 seed for the NFC playoffs.
