CHARLOTTE — The Panthers don't have many injury concerns going into the season, so they had to deactivate five healthy players Sunday.
In addition to injured wide receiver Shi Smith, the Panthers made the following five players inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets: Linebacker Clay Johnston, defensive tackle Phil Hoskins, offensive linemen Michael Jordan and Deonte Brown, and defensive end Darryl Johnson.
With wide receiver Alex Erickson elevated from the practice squad to return punts this week, the Panthers have to deactivate an extra player.
Game-day rosters are at 48 this season, so they had to deactivate six players. In weeks in which they don't elevate a player from the practice squad, it will be five.
