Fantasy Football Fun: Week 9

In a week when the top three in standings all had a least one player let them down, fantasy football analyst John Halpin made the biggest move of the week thanks to solid contributions across the board.

Buoyed by a 26.5-point day from Rams quarterback Jared Goff, Halpin rose from seventh overall to fourth. The two panelists at the bottom of the standings were the only ones to pick quarterback Cam Newton and they were rewarded with the most QB points of the week (27.46), but they still find themselves looking up.

While I managed to move up one spot to second place and close within 20 points of leader Josh Klein of the Riot Report, third place and eighth place are separated by less than 20 points. Then it's another 20 points back to Spectrum News sports director Mike Solarte in ninth place, and Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer is 20-plus points behind him. She is now 100 points off Klein's pace as we cross into the second half of the season.

In my effort to recapture the top spot, this week I become the final panelist to select Newton for the first time (to review, Panther players can be picked three times over the course of the year, while non-Panthers can be picked just once). The Buccaneers have struggled to slow passing attacks, and Newton has enjoyed plenty of big games against Tampa over the years.

I'm breaking out another couple of big names with matchups in mind: Washington running back Adrian Peterson against a vulnerable Falcons run defense and New Orleans wide receiver Michael Thomas against a great Rams team in a scenario where a shootout could break out.

With my other picks at those positions, I'm eyeing roster shakeups to look for good opportunities – the kinds of situations that daily fantasy players perhaps can exploit as well. Vikings running back Latavius Murray is no longer a fantasy secret after totaling four touchdowns the last three weeks in place of Dalvin Cook, but it's still a good time with Cook likely out for one more game. The Vikings will face the Lions and wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr., who I'm rolling with this week in light of Detroit trading away Golden Tate.

At the tricky tight end position, I'll take a shot with week with David Njoku of the Browns. He somehow wasn't targeted a single time last week; maybe the new coaches in charge will take note.
