In this day and age, marriage proposals can be pretty elaborate affairs with everything from arena video boards to hidden cameras to drones.
Max Harvat didn’t plan anything that elaborate. But he and his fiancé, Brooke Hartranft, will have a story to tell for the rest of their lives.
“We are just visiting Nashville for the week,” Harvat said by phone Friday morning. “It was kind of a crazy moment because I didn't really have any plans to do it. It was kind of a sporadic moment to ask her there. We were walking up on this balcony and when I went to ask her, I just saw this guy out of the corner of my eye filming. So I’m thinking, ‘Oh cool, someone is recording this. That’s perfect.’”
What Harvat didn’t realize was the person who was filming was Panthers tight end Greg Olsen.
“We were literally just walking back to the hotel and they were walking towards us,” said Olsen, who was in Nashville to give a keynote speech at a healthcare conference. “He all of a sudden just gets down on a knee and I stopped and I had my phone in my hand. So I’m thinking, ‘I would imagine that this guy would love to have this on film.’ He was literally five feet from us. It was amazing.”
Harvat’s blood pressure spiked again when he realized who randomly filmed his engagement.
“When I stood up, I looked over and I started having a mini heart attack. I was like, ‘I’m 90 percent sure that’s Greg Olsen from the Panthers!’”
Harvat’s new fiancee wasn’t so sure.
“Brooke looked at me and didn’t believe me,” Harvat said. “She just thought I was too excited and wasn’t seeing straight. But I’m like, ‘No, that’s him. I’ve seen him on TV and in interviews. That’s him!’”
To make this story even more ironic, Harvat said he's a Panthers fan who grew up in Pennsylvania. He’s followed the team since the days of Kerry Collins.
“I'm a huge Carolina fan. I was like, ‘Oh my God, you're telling me that Greg Olsen just recorded the whole thing?’ I was so excited. It was amazing.
“He was really respectful. He didn’t want to steal any of the moment from us. He sent me the video and said congratulations and wished us the best.”
