CHARLOTTE - Wide receiver Devin Funchess is listed as doubtful for Sunday's home game against the Seahawks because of a back injury that kept him out of practice all week. Torrey Smith, who has started across from Funchess whenever both have been healthy, is questionable.
"I feel pretty confident about Torrey. I thought he had a good day today," head coach Ron Rivera said about Smith, who has missed the last four games with a knee injury. Rivera said there's "a little glimmer" of hope that Funchess can play.
Smith returned to practice this week as a limited participant each day. He last played when he keyed a fourth-quarter rally that knocked off the Eagles back in Week 7.
Funchess, a 2015 draft pick, is likely to miss just the second game of his career. He finished last week's game against the Lions but wasn't able to practice leading up to Sunday's visit by Seattle. Funchess leads Panthers wide receivers in receptions (41) and yards (516) and is tied with Curtis Samuel with three receiving touchdowns.
Samuel, rookie DJ Moore and veterans Jarius Wright and Damiere Byrd are all candidates for more reps.
"Those four guys with their speed, their quickness, their elusiveness can be a threat," Rivera said. "We'll see how the rest of it goes."
