Biography

Jamel Mutunga starts his first season with the Carolina Panthers as offensive assistant. During the 2022 season, he was the offensive assistant through the Tony Dungy Diversity Coaching Fellows for the Indianapolis Colts.

Mutunga spent two seasons (2020-21) as an offensive assistant at Rutgers University. He spent the previous three seasons (2017-19) on staff at Princeton, where he coached the Tigers' running backs and helped Princeton's offense become one of the most prolific units in the FCS.

Princeton's backfield shined under the watch of Mutunga, as the Tigers produced the Ivy League's top rushing offense in three consecutive seasons from 2017-19. Princeton went 8-2 in 2019, with Collin Eaddy producing 12 rushing touchdowns and leading the team with 799 yards rushing to claim all-league accolades.

The Tigers went undefeated in 2018 and showcased back-to-back top-10 FCS team rushing totals in 2017 and 2018. Running back Charlie Volker earned first team all-conference laurels and rushed for an Ivy-best 14 touchdowns during the Tigers' undefeated campaign in 2018. Eaddy and Volker both earned multiple all-league recognitions.

During his Princeton tenure, Mutunga took part in the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Atlanta Falcons. Mutunga worked with the Falcons' running backs and wide receivers and also assisted with special projects for head coach Dan Quinn. Mutunga also took part in the program with the New York Jets in 2014.

Prior to his arrival at Princeton, Mutunga spent three seasons at Lehigh from 2014-16 as an offensive assistant coach. The Mountain Hawks possessed the No. 6 offense in the FCS during his final season on staff, as Lehigh running back Dom Bragalone rushed for 1,171 yards and 14 touchdowns to earn First Team All-Patriot League honors.

Mutunga's first collegiate coaching stop came at Muhlenberg, where he worked with the team's tight ends and running backs as an offensive assistant from 2012-13. The program produced 16 wins during his two-year stint in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which included an 8-3 record and an invitation to the ECAC South Atlantic Bowl in 2013.

A standout collegiate running back, Mutunga was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Gettysburg College from 2006-09. He totaled 2,804 career rushing yards and earned All-Centennial Conference honors three times. Mutunga tied a Centennial Conference record with five rushing touchdowns in one game and finished his career third on the Gettysburg all-time list with 38 touchdowns. A native of Bel Air, Md., Mutunga graduated from Gettysburg in 2011 with bachelor's degrees in business administration and economics.
