Greg Olsen signs two-year extension

Posted Apr 26, 2018

Three-time Pro Bowl tight end now under contract through the 2020 season.

CHARLOTTE – Tight end Greg Olsen has signed a two-year contract extension with the Panthers that runs through the 2020 season.

Olsen, the only tight end in NFL history to post three consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons, was entering the final year of a three-year extension he signed in 2015.

“I've made it clear over the past year that I want to keep playing and I want to play here,” Olsen said Thursday. “Both sides were very fair and worked on it in a timely manner. I feel really good about what we were able to get done both for ourselves and the team.”

Following Olsen's third 1,000-yard season in 2016, the Panthers added performance incentives to Olsen's deal for 2017, but the first significant injury of his career sidelined him. A broken foot limited him to seven regular season games, but after catching just 17 passes for 191 yards in the regular season, Olsen amassed eight catches for 107 yards and a touchdown in a NFC Wild Card loss to the Saints.

In 2015, Olsen set a new Panthers tight end record with 1,104 receiving yards to earn his second of three consecutive Pro Bowl nods. He currently owns the top five single-season franchise bests for tight end receiving yards and is third in Panthers history in receiving yards (5,575) and receptions (445).

Among NFL tight ends, Olsen ranks sixth in career receptions (639), seventh in receiving yards (7,556) and is tied for 10th in receiving touchdowns (53).

“Obviously, I'm 33, but I've played well in my 30s,” Olsen said. “Some of my best football has been since I turned 30. So I feel like I can play for a long time, and not only play, but play well.”

So does that mean this may not be his final contract?

“I don't know if my wife will like that,” Olsen said with a laugh. “I kind of told her this would be the last one, so I'll say yes for right now cause she'd kill me if I said no.”
