Top Play No. 7: Ealy Interception vs. Broncos

Posted Feb 18, 2016

Defensive end Kony Ealy surprised everyone, most notably Peyton Manning, dropping into coverage and picking off a pass with one hand in the Super Bowl.

The Panthers were on the losing end of Super Bowl 50, but defensive end Kony Ealy put together a performance worth celebrating.

He almost single-handedly pushed Carolina past Denver in the big game, posting three sacks, one of which was a strip-sack that led to a fumble he recovered.

Sacks aren’t atypical for the second-year defensive end, but a one-handed interception? That’s extraordinary, and that’s what Ealy pulled off against Peyton Manning.

The Panthers trailed by six in the closing minutes of the second quarter. On third-and-8 from the Carolina 24-yard line, Ealy dropped into coverage. Manning looked left and tried to connect with wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, but Ealy reached out his right hand, corralled the ball and took off for a 19-yard return.

Ealy became the first player to record an interception and multiple sacks in a Super Bowl.
