Position preview: Quarterbacks

With training camp less than three weeks away, Panthers.com is breaking down the 90-man roster that will head down to Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.

We'll provide a position-by-position assessment, getting things started with the quarterbacks.

Cam Newton
After passing for 3,869 passing yards and 19 touchdowns in his second season while at the same time leading the Panthers in rushing with 742 yards, Newton enters year three as the team's dynamic starter under center. ... Set an NFL record for the most passing yards in a player's first two seasons with 7,920, surpassing the previous mark of 7,874 by Peyton Manning. ... Set a team record for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception with 176 in 2012, breaking the previous mark of 150 by Jake Delhomme. ... Only player in NFL history with 30 or more passing touchdowns (40) and 20 or more rushing touchdowns (22) in first two seasons.

Derek Anderson
Anderson returns for a third season as the backup quarterback in Carolina after re-signing as an unrestricted free agent this offseason. ... In 2012, the eight-year veteran saw his first regular season action in a Panthers uniform, appearing in two games and completing all four of his passes for 58 yards. ... Anderson spent most of his career with the Cleveland Browns and made the Pro Bowl in 2007.

Jimmy Clausen
A second-round draft choice in 2010, Clausen started 10 games as a rookie but hasn't appeared in a game since. ... Threw for 1,558 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie. ... Finished career at Notre Dame ranking first or second in 32 passing categories despite forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL.

Colby Cameron
An undrafted rookie free agent signing out of Louisiana Tech. ... Threw for 6,417 yards and 45 touchdowns with 13 interceptions in 21 career starts. ... Holds the NCAA career record for most consecutive pass attempts without an interception with 444.
