NASHVILLE -- As had become clear when the Panthers held Cam Newton out of team drills during this week's joint practices in Tennessee, the Panthers don't plan to play their quarterback in Saturday's preseason game against the Titans. But his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery remains on track.
Newton is scheduled to increase his workload in practice when the Panthers return to Charlotte, and he could make his preseason debut Thursday night in Jacksonville.
Contrary to reports, Newton did not have his shoulder evaluated on Friday, and coaches and the team's training staff were pleased with the work he was able to put in this week.
Linebacker Luke Kuechly will also be held out of Saturday's game. It's a precautionary move for Kuechly, who's been dealing with sore ribs.Â
