Neither offense settled for field goals in regulation. After a scoreless first quarter, the Buccaneers struck twice before halftime, both on short touchdown passes from Jameis Winston to Adam Humphries. In between, running back Jonathan Stewart took it in on a 1-yard dive to keep the Panthers close at 14-7.

The Panthers pounced in the third quarter, taking their first lead with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey – who gained 84 yards from scrimmage on the day – and a 1-yard score to tight end Chris Manhertz. In addition to two touchdown passes, quarterback Cam Newton threw for 312 yards, hitting Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess a total of 15 times for 127 yards.

The fourth quarter was filled with offense and drama. Tampa tied it with a 2-yard touchdown run by Doug Martin; the Panthers retook the lead with a 1-yard run by Stewart; and the Buccaneers forced overtime with a 29-yard touchdown toss to running back Charles Sims.

In overtime, the Panthers defense got a stop and set up Graham Gano to win a thriller with a 36-yard field goal.
