CHARLOTTE - The Panthers have claimed linebacker Doug Hogue off waivers from the Detroit Lions.

Hogue, the Lions' fifth-round draft pick out of Syracuse in 2011, will take the roster spot previously occupied by cornerback Chris Gamble, who was placed on injured reserve Monday with a shoulder injury. Gamble, who started the first four games and had 13 tackles and one pass defensed, is the eighth Panther to go on injured reserve this season.

The Panthers were down a linebacker on their 53-man roster after placing Kenny Onatolu on IR last week and replacing him with cornerback Ron Parker, who took over Onatolu's special teams role.

Hogue saw action on special teams throughout his tenure in Detroit. The 6-2, 226-pounder was on the active roster for 13 games as a rookie and made six special teams tackles. This season, he played in five games and had two special teams tackles.

Hogue was a running back his first two years at Syracuse before switching to linebacker. In 25 career games on defense, Hogue racked up 26.5 tackles for loss, the ninth-highest total in school history.
