CHARLOTTE – Quarterback Derek Anderson is returning to the Panthers to back up Cam Newton for a fourth season after signing a two-year deal as an unrestricted free agent.

Anderson – a nine year veteran – appeared in four games in 2013 but did not attempt a pass. Anderson was 4-for-4 on pass attempts for 58 yards in 2012 after zero pass attempts in 2011.

Anderson initially came to Carolina in 2011 after one year with the Arizona Cardinals and five with the Cleveland Browns and has played in eight games in his three seasons with the Panthers.

ADDITIONAL MOVE: The Panthers signed free agent tight end Mike McNeill to a two-year deal.

McNeill has been with the St. Louis Rams since 2011. He's played 32 games with one start and has recorded five catches for 36 yards. He originally signed with Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent in 2011, playing four games with the Colts.
