Panthers release unofficial 2017 depth chart

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Thursday, the Panthers released their first "unofficial" depth chart of the 2017 season as required by the league.

Click to view the depth chart, which will obviously remain fluid throughout the preseason.

Some notes about notable players and positions:

  • At wide receiver, behind starters Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess are Russell Shepard and Brenton Bersin, who has enjoyed a productive training camp. Second-round draft choice Curtis Samuel, who has missed the majority of camp with a hamstring injury, is listed behind those four.
  • Charles Johnson and Mario Addison are listed as the starters at defensive end, with Julius Peppers listed behind Johnson.
  • First-round pick Christian McCaffrey is listed behind Jonathan Stewart at running back, and is listed at the top punt returner. Running back Fozzy Whittaker is listed as the top kick returner, ahead of Damiere Byrd and Samuel.
  • The second-team offensive line from left to right: left tackle Amini Silatolu, guard Dan France, center Tyler Larsen, guard Chris Scott and rookie right tackle Taylor Moton.
  • Chris Manhertz is listed as the third tight end, behind Greg Olsen and Ed Dickson.
