Panthers Commitment to Girls High School Flag Football
Since 2022, the Panthers and The David & Nicole Tepper Foundation have worked to expand opportunities for young girls in flag football, committing more than $2,500,000 in grants, programming, and resources to build programs across the Carolinas. The Panthers partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to launch the first pilot program four years ago in North Carolina with 19 schools and 500 athletes. Since then it's grown to over 200 participating high schools and over 3,000 athletes across North and South Carolina, reflecting the enthusiasm and commitment of student-athletes, coaches, and local communities for the sport. The rapid growth of the sport at the collegiate level provides new scholarship opportunities for girls in our region, opening up a pathway for girls to continue their education. Participation continues to grow at an incredible pace region-wide, and more schools, communities, and young athletes embrace the game every single year.
Girls High School Flag Football in North Carolina
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association voted to officially sanction girls flag football as a varsity sport statewide. North Carolina now becomes the 22nd state to sanction girls flag, joining a national movement in the leadup to the 2028 Olympic Games, where flag football will make its global debut. This fall, 154 high schools across North Carolina are committed to fielding girls flag football teams, a number expected to grow in the coming weeks. This milestone is about so much more than the sport itself; it's about opening new doors for young women to compete, to lead, and to discover what they're capable of.
