Week 1 Wednesday Injury Report: Shi Smith alone on the list

InjuryReport-wed-week1

CHARLOTTE - Rookie wide receiver Shi Smith was the lone player listed on Carolina's first injury report of the season on Wednesday.

Smith, who suffered a shoulder injury in the preseason, worked out on the side in a red jersey Wednesday.

His injury was initially estimated as a two- to three-week issue, so they didn't consider using an injured reserve spot on him (which would have meant a minimum absence of three weeks).

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule knocked on his wooden lectern when asked about their relative health.

"Obviously we had a hard camp, so just credit to the guys, they worked hard to stay healthy and be healthy," Rhule said. "We've lost some guys along the way we cared a great deal about and thought were going to be part of the team too. But we are where we are right now, and I think our guys are hitting their stride physically.

"It could be hot on Sunday, so conditioning and hydration are the next things we have to handle."

The Panthers placed two players on season-ending injured reserve prior to the start of camp (Troy Pride Jr. and Thomas Fletcher), and guard John Miller is on the reserve/COVID-19 list at the moment.
