Week 5 Wednesday Injury Report: Eli Apple limited in practice

Eli Apple

CHARLOTTE — Cornerback Eli Apple (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis during Wednesday's first session of the week.

Apple left Sunday's win over the Cardinals with a pulled hamstring after playing just six special teams snaps. He spent the season's first three weeks on injured reserve after dealing with foot, ankle, and hamstring injuries during training camp.

Left tackle Russell Okung (groin) has missed Carolina's last two games but practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday. Head coach Matt Rhule said Okung was "close" to returning last week, but the Panthers kept him out to prevent further injury.

The Panthers are heading into Week 5 relatively healthy. Cornerback Donte Jackson (toe) and tight end Chris Manhertz (ankle) were the only other players who didn't practice in full.

The one trouble spot injury-wise is at running back. On Tuesday,Reggie Bonnafon went on the practice squad/injured list with a high ankle sprain.

"I hate it for Reggie," head coach Matt Rhule said. "He was doing everything needed, had some great runs the last two weeks, caught the touchdown. But that's the name of the game.

"I'm happy that, hopefully, we can get him back at some point."

With Christian McCaffrey still on IR for at least this week, Carolina currently has Mike Davis and Trenton Cannon on the active roster. Undrafted rookie Pete Guerrerio is also on the practice squad. Rhule mentioned wide receiver Curtis Samuel has taken reps at running back, and fullback Alex Armah can take carries, too.

"We like our players, and we'll continue to trust our players to go out there and play," Rhule said.

In Atlanta, wide receiver Julio Jones did not practice Wednesday. He played only 15 snaps against Green Bay on Monday night due to a hamstring injury that has hobbled him all season, keeping him out of the Falcons' Week 3 loss to the Bears.
