Bobby Maffei is in his second season with the Carolina Panthers, and first as a defensive quality control coach after spending the 2021 season as a defensive assistant. Prior to Carolina, he spent the previous two seasons as defensive analyst at the University of Nebraska.
In 2022, Maffei contributed to a defense that ranked 13th in the NFL in points per game (21.0), 10th in rushing defense (116.3), and fifth in takeaways (11) over the course of the final 12 games of the season. He worked closely with the secondary and took on a larger role after staff changes in October 2022. Second-year cornerback Jaycee Horn paced the team with three interceptions, while fellow corners Donte Jackson and CJ Henderson added two each.
In 2021, the Husker defense finished 36th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 22.7 points per game against a schedule that featured eight teams that won nine games. The opponents points per game average was the lowest for a Nebraska defense since 2010. During his one season as special teams coordinator at Richmond in 2019, the Spiders ranked second nationally in the FCS in kickoff returns. He also served as a defensive assistant while at Richmond.
Maffei spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons at Baylor as a defensive quality control coach and also spent time with them at Temple where he served as a defensive graduate assistant (2014-15).
He also worked at Tennessee Tech (2016) and Central Connecticut State (2011-13). Maffei earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in 2011 and his master's degree from Temple in 2016.
