Prior to joining Carolina, Patten spent time with San Francisco (2010-13) as the director of college scouting and then director of player personnel, a national scout for Washington (2004-08), and as a regional scout, with St. Louis (2009), Houston (2000-03) and in his first stint in Washington (1996-99).
After he entered the league as an undrafted free agent offensive tackle with Cleveland (1980), Patten played eight seasons in the NFL and three in USFL, seeing action in 56 career games for the Browns (1980-82), Colts (1987-88), Chargers (1989-90), Los Angeles Raiders (1991-92), as well as time with the Washington Federals (1983-84) and the Orlando Renegades (1985) of the USFL.
A graduate of Duke University, Patten and his wife, Betsy, have been married for 40 years. The couple have three children, daughters, Christina and Kimberly, and son, Jake. Jake and his wife, Brittany, have the Pattens' four-year old granddaughter, Saylor Wrenn.
