Harold Goodwin enters his second season as the assistant head coach/run game coordinator for the Panthers, bringing over 20 years of NFL coaching experience to Carolina. Goodwin served in the same role for Tampa Bay from 2019-23.
In Goodwin's first season with Carolina (2024), running back Chuba Hubbard set career-highs in carries (250), rushing yards (1,195), rushing touchdowns (10), catches (43), and scrimmage yards (1,366) and was named a Pro Bowl alternate. It was the first 1,000-yard season of Hubbard's and the first by a Panther since Christian McCaffrey (2019). Overall, the Panthers' rushing offense gained 4.6 yards per carry, the 10th best in the NFL, while their 18 rushing touchdowns were tied for eighth. Another Pro Bowler under Goodwin's tutelage was guard Robert Hunt, who was named to his first career Pro Bowl game in Orlando. Hunt was an essential part of the offensive line that helped reduce the number of sacks from 65.0 in 2023 to 36.0 in 2024.
During Goodwin's five seasons in Tampa Bay (2019-23), the Buccaneers' run game provided balance to a league-leading passing offense. The Bucs ranked second in total offense in 2021, third in 2019, and seventh in 2020. During their Super Bowl LV Championship run (2020), the rushing offense averaged 122.5 yards per game in the four wins, including 145 yards in the Super Bowl.
The Buccaneers had three different players lead the team in rushing in Gilbert's five seasons. Ronald Jones II set a franchise record for rushing yards per attempt (5.1) in 2020, Leonard Fournette finished 2021 in the top 10 for total first downs, scrimmage touchdowns, and scrimmage yards among all running backs, and in 2023, Rachaad White tied for seventh in the NFL in scrimmage yards (1,539).
Prior to joining the Buccaneers, Goodwin helped transform the Cardinals offense into one of the best in the NFL. The team ranked 32nd in the NFL the season before his arrival and, by the 2015 season, established franchise records for points scored (489), touchdowns (59), touchdown passes (35), total net yards (6,533), first downs (373) and passing first downs (237), while leading the NFL in net yards and ranking second in points scored.
Leading the Cardinals offense was quarterback Carson Palmer, who set franchise records with 4,671 passing yards, 35 touchdown passes and a 104.6 quarterback rating, en route to earning a Pro Bowl berth and being named second-team AP All-Pro. Palmer was sacked only 27.0 times on 562 attempts, tied for the fourth-fewest allowed in the NFL. Arizona ranked eighth in the NFL in rushing (119.8 yards per game) and scored 16 rushing touchdowns – tied for the sixth-most in the NFL – despite having three different players start at running back.
In 2016, Arizona scored 418 points, the fourth-most in a season in team history, while ranking ninth in the NFL in net yards (5,868) and sixth in points scored. The offense was led by second-year running back David Johnson, who set franchise records and led the NFL in scrimmage yards (2,118) and touchdowns (20), while being named to the Pro Bowl and earning first-team AP All-Pro honors. Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald also earned a Pro Bowl berth after leading the NFL in receptions (107).
As offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts (2012), Goodwin helped the team's offense finish 10th in the NFL in yards per game (362.4). During his time with the Steelers (2007-11), Goodwin was part of the team that won Super Bowl XLIII and advanced to Super Bowl XLV. Working with the Steelers offensive line, Goodwin helped center Maurkice Pouncey earn Pro Bowl berths in each of their two seasons working together.
Goodwin began his NFL career as an assistant offensive line coach with the Chicago Bears, spending three seasons with the team (2004-06). Prior to joining the Bears, he spent eight seasons in the collegiate ranks, first working as a graduate assistant/student assistant at his alma mater, Michigan (1995-97), before stints with Eastern Michigan (1998-99) and Central Michigan (2000-03). He and his wife, Monica, have two daughters, Kylee and Miya, and one son, Bryson.
