Renaldo Hill begins his first season with Carolina as the secondaries coach, joining the Panthers after spending the 2023 season with the Miami Dolphins as their passing game coordinator/secondary coach. Following a 10-year playing career, Hill brings 11 seasons of coaching experience to the Panthers, including six in the NFL.
In 2023, he returned to the Dolphins as the team's passing game coordinator/secondary coach. Hill was part of a unit that ranked 10th in total defense, allowing just 318.3 yards per game. This marked the first time Miami finished a season with a top-10 defense in over a decade. The defense scored on four interception returns, which was tied for the second-most in the league and the second-most in franchise history. Despite missing the first seven games of the season, cornerback Jalen Ramsey earned a Pro Bowl selection in his first year with the Dolphins. In the 10 regular-season games Ramsey played, he picked off three passes, which was tied for seventh in the NFL since his return in Week 8.
Before his return to Miami, Hill spent two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers (2021-22). In 2022, the Chargers finished 10-7 and made their first postseason appearance since 2018. Keyed by a defense that finished in the top five in scoring defense, total defense, and passing defense over the final five weeks, the Chargers went 4-1 to secure a postseason berth. Under his tutelage, safety Derwin James Jr. and linebacker Khalil Mack each earned Pro Bowl selections, and James was also named second-team All-Pro.
In Hill's first season leading their defense (2021), the Chargers led the NFL in strip sacks with 11 and ranked third in the league with 19 forced fumbles. Outside linebacker Joey Bosa accounted for a league-best seven strip-sacks and earned his third-straight Pro Bowl appearance.
As the defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos (2019-20), Hill coached safety Justin Simmons to his first Pro Bowl appearance in 2020 following a career-best five-interception season. Simmons also earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2019. In 2019, Hill's secondary ranked 11th in the NFL in pass defense.
In 2018, Hill helped the Dolphins secondary become one of the best in the NFL at creating turnovers. Selected to his first Pro Bowl, cornerback Xavien Howard's seven interceptions were tied for the most in the league. When targeted, Miami's defensive backs combined for 17 picks, good for the second-most in the NFL, and allowed a 93.1 passer rating for opposing quarterbacks, the ninth-lowest in the league. Hill also helped develop rookie safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, whose two interceptions were tied for seventh among NFL rookies while his 80 tackles (51 solo) ranked 10th.
Following his playing career, Hill began his coaching career at Wyoming (2012-13) where he served as a graduate assistant (2012) before he was promoted to cornerbacks coach (2013).
As the secondary coach at the University of Pittsburgh (2015-17), Hill coached two All-ACC honorees as cornerback Avonte Maddox earned third-team honors and junior safety Jordan Whitehead earned honorable mention. Both were later selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Entering the league as a seventh-round pick with the Cardinals (2001), Hill played 10 NFL seasons for four different teams – Arizona (2001-04), Oakland (2005), Miami (2006-08) and Denver (2009-10). In 141 games (114 starts) he totaled 19 interceptions. Hill played collegiately at Michigan State, where he was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree as a senior in 2000. He earned his bachelor's degree in retail management from Michigan State in 2012.
