Panthers trade Andre Smith to Bills

Andre Smith

CHARLOTTE — Instead of releasing him outright, the Panthers have traded linebacker Andre Smith to the Bills.

The team announced its intention Monday morning to waive Smith. But Carolina rescinded the transaction Monday afternoon before it officially went through. Instead, Buffalo decided to acquire Smith for a conditional late-round pick in 2023.

A 2018 seventh-round pick out of North Carolina, Smith appeared in all 16 games last season. He was a heavy special teams contributor as a second-year pro, playing 66 percent of snaps on the unit. Smith also had 25 snaps on defense in 2019, making five tackles.

The Panthers roster currently stands at 79 players, but head coach Matt Rhule said the club plans to fill that spot. Carolina must cut its roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.
