CHARLOTTE — The Panthers added some backfield depth and an experienced return option for this weekend's game with the Giants.

The team signed veteran running back Ameer Abdullah Saturday.

The 28-year-old Abdullah was released by the Vikings earlier this week.

He had two kickoff returns for 68 yards against the Panthers last week, including a 45-yarder which set up a Vikings' scoring drive.

A former second-round pick of the Lions from Nebraska, Abdullah has a career kick return average of 26.2 per return, and has 2,031 career yards from scrimmage.

He gives them some depth behind Chuba Hubbard and Royce Freeman in the backfield.

Also Saturday, the Panthers promoted a pair of wide receivers from the practice squad, bringing up Keith Kirkwood and Aaron Parker (standard elevations).

They provide some depth with core special teamer Brandon Zylstra going on IR this week, and Terrace Marshall Jr. out with a concussion.
