CHARLOTTE – The Panthers have promoted cornerback Lou Young from the practice squad and released tight end Scott Simonson. Young, who has never played in a regular season game, was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday.
Head coach Ron Rivera indicated on Friday that the team would likely elevate Young to provide depth at corner. Carolina will be without starters James Bradberry (foot) and Robert McClain (hamstring) on Sunday against the Saints.
Simonson, the team's third tight end behind Greg Olsen and Ed Dickson, has played in all five games but did not record a catch.
The Panthers brought back wide receiver Damiere Byrd to fill the open spot on the practice squad. Byrd was waived earlier this week to make room for defensive end Wes Horton on the active roster.
