CHARLOTTE — The Panthers had to find a short-term replacement at punter when Joseph Charlton was injured, and he's since become a long-term one.
The Panthers released Charlton Tuesday, electing to stick with Lachlan Edwards for the rest of the season.
They had designated Charlton to return from injured reserve, but with the way Edwards has been performing, they decided to keep him on the field.
In three games, Edwards has averaged 48.5 yards per punt, with two of his 11 attempts pinned inside the 20, and a net average of 40.6. The Australian punter spent his first four years in the league with the Jets.
Charlton was solid last year, after making the team as an undrafted rookie from South Carolina. But he struggled earlier this year, before back issues landed him on IR. He averaged 39.1 yards per punt, with a 37.5-yard net this season, down from 46.3 and 40.8 last year.
The Panthers also made a change on the practice squad. They released Treyvon Hester, and signed Josh Avery.
Avery, from Southeast Missouri, spent some time with the Packers previously.
