Rapid Reactions: Panthers complete wild comeback as Bryce Young airs it out

Bryce Young

ATLANTA — The Panthers proved they could throw it.

And Bryce Young proved his toughness.

And they were finally able to overcome their Atlanta problem.

The Panthers came back for a frantic 30-27 overtime win over the Falcons on Sunday, which saw Young leave the game briefly but return to throw for a career-high and franchise-record 448 yards.

It allowed them to improve to 6-5 on the season, and sweep the Falcons for the first time since 2013 and just the fourth time in franchise history.

Young hit Tommy Tremble for a 54-yard catch-and-run in overtime, allowing the local product to help seal the game. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald, who kicked here twice as a high-schooler, won it with a 28-yard field goal, his third walk-off of the season.

It was a brave effort from Young, who walked to the locker room in the first quarter with an ankle injury. While he didn't miss a snap in the first, it appeared to slow him as he came out from under center in the fourth quarter, as he appeared to trip over right guard Chandler Zavala and fall to the ground, and was sacked on fourth-and-1.

But that wasn't the end.

The Panthers had a final shot, and Young made the most of it.

He hit Tetairoa McMillan for the go-ahead touchdown and Jalen Coker for the two-point conversion.

The Falcons matched the resilience, with backup quarterback Kirk Cousins, subbing for the injured Michael Penix Jr., driving them for a game-tying field goal. Former Panthers kicker Zane Gonzalez hit the 45-yarder for the Falcons to send the game to overtime.

But the Panthers got the final word.

The game did serve as an answer to the recent questions about the passing game, as Young was both efficient and explosive, hitting a number of downfield shots. All of that came after Young waved off an offered cart ride to the locker room, walking back to get his ankle checked in the first quarter.

While Andy Dalton warmed up, Young didn't miss a snap, and he didn't miss many passes the rest of the way.

He finished with 448 yards and three touchdowns, surpassing the 328 from the wild comeback attempt at Arizona in Week 2.

The Panthers defense also tightened up as the day went on, after a first half in which they struggled to slow down the Falcons.

Wide receiver Drake London had five catches for 108 yards, and Bijan Robinson had 16 carries for 93 yards at halftime, as the Falcons raced to a 21-7 lead.

But the Panthers clawed back a field goal just before halftime, and then added a touchdown on their first possession of the second half to make it a game again.

After that point, there were small things that didn't fall their way, from a stopped two-point conversion to a failed fourth-down attempt inside the Falcons' 10.

But Young and the Panthers had answers, and with Tampa Bay's loss to Buffalo, now sit just a half-game back in the NFC South.
