CHARLOTTE — The Panthers will have their starting quarterback back on the field this week, and his backup, too.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Friday that Bryce Young was clear to start against the Packers after missing last week's game, and that Andy Dalton would back him up despite suffering a thumb injury in the loss to the Bills.
Young has practiced fully all week and has no injury designation on the final report.
"Better and better, handled the week really well," Canales said when asked about Young's mobility."Each day just kind of ramped up some of the things we were exposing him to. He looked awesome, working with these guys, just getting in there, reading, communicating, and physically just looked like he's ready to go."
Young had only missed one game in his career because of injury prior to last week, and that was a one-game absence in his rookie year.
Dalton played through a thumb injury, but was able to practice on a limited basis Thursday and Friday, and Canales said he was confident to have him back up.
Mike White, signed to the active roster this week, will be the inactive emergency third, who can only play if the other two are physically unable.
"Andy will be the backup this week; he demonstrated the ability to control the ball, throw it, really amazing, unbelievable. I'm very grateful that he's able to play through stuff like this and wants to be there for his team. And he showed that. He threw well yesterday, came back today, threw well again, so excited to have that."
White gives them the flexibility to promote two other players for the practice squad, which they might need with two players out and six listed as questionable on the injury report.
"It gives us a great chance for him to be the emergency third on game day, and be able to count on him that way, especially just in the situation that we're in," Canales said. "And if it gets to that point, then I've got full confidence having you here for a couple of weeks, being able to work through things on the call sheet and the levels of comfortability with what we're doing."
