Bryce Young practices fully, Andy Dalton held out of practice

Quarterbacks Wednesday

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers got one of their quarterbacks back on the practice field on Wednesday, which is a good sign.

But another name popped up on the injury report that complicates things.

Bryce Young was a full participant on Wednesday, after missing last week's loss to the Bills with an ankle injury.

But backup Andy Dalton, the only other quarterback on the active roster, did not participate with a right thumb injury.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Young "really wants to" play Sunday against the Packers, but they want to make smart long-term decisions. Wednesday's practice was a shorter one, and Canales said they were mindful of the physical demands.

"We had a little bit of a modified practice today, but he handled it, handled the load," Canales said of Young. "Tomorrow we'll push it again, and we'll make a decision in the next couple of days."

Canales said Dalton was injured in the first quarter against the Bills.

"He injured his thumb really early in the game," Canales said of Dalton. He was a stud, you know, he gutted it out and was able to be out there and allow us to finish the game that way. And it just really blew up on him after the game, and he got imaging on it through our process over the last couple of days.

"So we've got to see where he's at going into this weekend and make decisions from there."

Dalton turned the ball over three times during the game, and Canales said it could have impacted his play.

"I would imagine, it's on his throwing-side thumb, on his right hand," Canales said. "I just love when guys, ... he knew this was important for the team and he wanted to be out there for his guys to be able to give us the rhythm, to give us a chance to do it and to win, so I just applaud Andy for that and, you know, he gutted it out."

The Panthers have Mike White and Hendon Hooker on the practice squad, and if Dalton isn't able to go, they would need one to suit up Sunday against the Packers.

Hooker was elevated from the practice squad to back up Dalton Sunday against the Bills, and Canales said they were still talking about what to do there.
