CHARLOTTE — The Panthers are 4-4 and 1-0 in the division after Week 8. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued to win, with a victory over divisional opponent, the New Orleans Saints. And the Atlanta Falcons fell to the Miami Dolphins. Thanks to the loss, the Panthers remain second in the division behind the Bucs.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-2, 2-0): Bucs stay on top of the division with bounce-back win

Tampa Bay was able to bounce back after a brutal Monday Night Football loss to the Lions last week. Baker Mayfield and crew took care of business in the Big Easy, taking down divisional opponent, New Orleans, 23-3.

It was an off day for an offense that lost its heartbeat last week, Mike Evans, to a broken collarbone. Mayfield had his lowest production of the season thus far, finishing 15-24 for 152 yards. Tampa Bay's offense converted a mere 3-13 on third down and had four shots from the 1-yard line on goal-to-go, only to be stuffed each time.

"Wins are great. They are very hard to come by in this league," Mayfield said after the win. "But we have to be better on offense."

The Bucs defense ensured the game was well in hand, though, and after a scoreless first quarter, it was the defense that got the scoring started. Outside linebacker Anthony Nelson, in his first start of the season in place of the injured Haason Reddick, tipped a Spencer Rattler pass to himself deep in Saints territory, and practically waltzed in for the 3-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Nelson also finished with 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. He becomes the first player since 2007 to accomplish all three in a single game.

"You definitely get into that zone, and a lot of it has to do with the guys around you," said Nelson. "We have a lot of guys going after the ball, getting strips and punching out, and some that were close that ended up being incompletions, so when everybody is doing it, it gets contagious and you can feel it. It gives you confidence."

Antoine Winfield Jr. made his own mark on defense as well, with a fumble recovery and his first interception of the season. The fumble recovery was returned and seemed to be a touchdown, but was called dead due to an inadvertent whistle.

The defense sacked the two Saints quarterbacks a total of 5.0 times.

New Orleans Saints (1-7, 0-1): Saints make a quarterback change after divisional loss

The Saints played their first divisional matchup of the season in Week 8, and they had to take on the team at the top of the NFC South. We won't go over the entire game that was just recapped in the above section, but there are a few updates from the game on the Saints' side of things.

In the third quarter, after quarterback Spencer Rattler had gone 15-21 for 136 yards, an interception, and a fumble, head coach Kellen Moore made a change and inserted rookie Tyler Shough, who finished 17-30 for 128 yards and an interception.

Moore told reporters after the game that the QB change "had more to do with the whole offense just not playing well and hopefully trying to generate some sort of spark there.

"I love Spence. I love Tyler. I love these guys to death. These are never easy things. We're just trying to find a formula that works to our advantage."

"I think we just have to evaluate this whole thing for the next 48 hours on offense and find the solutions that give us the best chance to win," said Moore earlier in the week. "I thought Tyler went in there and looked the part. He made some plays. The one interception was unfortunate. He gave us a chance to convert there. We will obviously make that evaluation quickly, and we will make some decisions moving forward.

"This has so much to do with the entire offense. We're not playing well enough. I have to coach better. I have to find the solutions. I'm not doing a good enough job, obviously. We were trying to generate a spark. Spencer, I thought, he has done plenty of good through the course of the season when you look at it from a bigger perspective."

On Wednesday, the Saints officially announced a switch, naming Shough the starting quarterback for the Week 9 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Atlanta Falcons (3-4, 0-2): With starters out, Falcons fall to the Dolphins

Atlanta's defense is still Top 5 in total defense, but on Sunday against the Dolphins, the unit gave up 205 yards and four touchdowns to Tua Tagovailoa, in what would finish as a 34-10 loss for the Falcons. It was Miami's first win since Week 4, and the second loss in a row for the Falcons, who fell in primetime last week to the 49ers.

Atlanta came into Week 8 shorthanded at a number of positions. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (knee) was held out, as well as receiver Drake London, who was added to the injury report on Saturday with a hip. Defensive end Zach Harrison (knee), who is the Falcons' sack leader, was also sidelined and was joined by rookie edge rusher Jalon Walker (groin) and corner Billy Bowman Jr. (hamstring).

Safety Jessie Bates III (ankle) left the game in the third quarter.

The club also placed linebacker Divine Deablo (forearm) on Injured Reserve Saturday before the game.

Morris told reporters on Monday that Bates and most everyone else who was injured or out for Week 8 will be day-to-day.

"I got no more information than I had (postgame) other than I know it's not a serious injury," Morris said of Bates. "It'll be one of those day-to-day things, so we'll kind of be in wait-and-see mode.

"And realistically, that's just about everybody else as well. Michael Penix. Drake London. Zach Harrison. All those guys will kind of be in a wait-and-see mode, day-to-day mentality. But nobody cares about injuries, really. We don't really talk about it. We just go to get ready to go."

On that note, it's hard to shape a narrative of this loss around those injuries. Kirk Cousins went 21-31 for 173 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions in the loss. But the Dolphins came in with a plan regardless of who was at quarterback; shut down Bijan Robinson. They did exactly that, holding him to 25 yards on nine carries and 23 yards on three receptions.

"This is my third year, and I don't want to keep saying, 'We played low on Sunday and high on another Sunday,'" Robinson said after the loss. "Consistency has been the biggest thing for us as a team, and that's what needs to be preached."

During the third quarter, Robinson ran for 17 yards, the Falcons' longest play from scrimmage to that point on the day. The next play, the Dolphins forced a fumble on Robinson. It was his first fumble since Week 15 of 2023, his rookie season, when the Falcons lost to the Panthers.

"I mean, they went out and smashed us today," Morris said. "They had a beat on what we're doing defensively. Had a beat on what we were doing on special teams. They did a nice job today. We did not."

Take a look at some of Sunday's best shots from the Panthers Week 8 game against the Bills.
