New look for Panthers linebackers

Shaq Thompson

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers are going to have two more single digits on defense.

Linebackers Shaq Thompson and Jermaine Carter are changing uniform numbers, effective with today's game against the Jets.

Thompson is going back to the 7 he wore as a linebacker/running back at Washington. Carter is wearing 4 now. He wore 23 and 1 at Maryland.

They join cornerback Jaycee Horn, who's wearing 8, in adopting the new-look number this year.

An NFL rules change this offseason allowed players to adopt non-traditional numbers. Veterans can only do it this year if they buy up the stock of their existing jerseys, so Thompson and Carter were clearly willing to do so.
