CHARLOTTE – Wide receiver Brenton Bersin, a potential restricted free agent, has signed a one-year contract to remain with the Panthers.
"This is a huge day," Bersin said. "I'm excited to be back and excited they wanted me back. I'm excited to get to work."
The Charlotte native and former Wofford Terrier began his career on the Panthers' practice squad in 2013 before making his NFL debut the following year, posting 24 receptions for 287 yards and one touchdown in 34 games. He has provided depth for all the receiver spots but says he's most comfortable in the slot and hopes to compete for the role previously held by Jerricho Cotchery, now Carolina's assistant wide receivers coach.
"That's where Cotch played for us two years ago when we had such a great season," Bersin said. "Hopefully he can teach me some things, and I can help this team win."
Wide receivers Philly Brown and LaRon Byrd are Carolina's only other restricted free agents. They will become free agents if the Panthers do not tender them or extend their contracts before Thursday's 4 p.m. deadline.
