Play of the Day: Hunter Renfrow keeps making plays

Hunter Renfrow

CHARLOTTE — Hunter Renfrow has had a good camp so far, but Hunter Renfrow has had a good career, so this shouldn't necessarily be a surprise.

Of course, the context of him being out of the game last year and struggling the year before that because of health issues has made his return a bit of a surprise to some.

But the veteran wide receiver had an exceptional day Saturday, on a day that was conducive to his particular gifts.

During one-on-one drills with defensive backs, Renfrow was able to showcase his route-running ability and shake safety Tre'von Moehrig a time or two. On one in particular, he led Moehrig one direction, and then stopped abruptly, leaving him wide open for the catch.

(And in fairness to Moehrig, who knows well from their shared days with the Raiders, Renfrow's a hard cover in a drill practically designed to benefit the offensive player.)

Panthers head coach Dave Canales almost shrugged when asked about the sequence and Renfrow's first week in camp, because he remembers the 103-catch, nine-touchdown season he had in 2021, before the health problems kicked in.

Renfrow was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, which cost him months to diagnose and treat, leaving him fatigued and weak, and down to 150 pounds at one point.

"I mean, it's just the Hunter Renfrow I remember," Canales said. "So he looks healthy, and I think everyone who's watched football over the last four or five years remembers what he looks like. And he's really playing at top form right now. I'm really excited to have him here and to have his family, which is right down the road here after this practice to be able to just connect with him.

"And it's a great story that's unfolding right in front of our eyes, so it's really exciting to see him playing out there."

His wife Camilla and kids were also on hand Saturday, giving him a chance to catch up in the shade after practice.

That made it a great day for Renfrow at multiple levels.
