CHARLOTTE — When Tre'von Moehrig signed with the Carolina Panthers back in March, he knew what Dan Morgan, Dave Canales, and Ejiro Evero were asking of him. He knew what kind of culture he was signing up for and the goals he was committing to with a young, ascending team.

"Their vision of the team and where the team was headed, how they felt about me, and sharing their vision with how they see me fitting in the scheme of the defense," Moehrig recalled Friday, "and just based on those things, you know, explained how the people are in the building.

"It's a fun place to come work too, so just those things alone, you know, I got the feeling, I got to see firsthand, so I was excited to come here."

But he still needed to feel it out on the grass. To walk through the playbook live, see the scheme unfold around him, and be in it to truly know what he could be in this defense. Now, after a full calendar of OTAs, mandatory minicamp, and a week into training camp, the versatile safety is beginning to get a clearer picture.

Actually, scratch that; Moehrig plays so many places that he prefers the term defensive back over safety.

"Man, I probably just say defensive back. Being able to play wherever the coaches need to be able to play, really," he laughed following Friday's walk-through.

"I feel like just being able to line up at a bunch of different spots, and just being able to learn different techniques and different coverages and how to play in those spots and, just the whole versatility like I said of the whole defense so implementing that into the scheme, it's been really fun to be around."

It's been no secret, though, that Carolina posted a defensive performance last season that most would like to forget. And Moehrig was added as a piece that the front office feels confident can help change the outcome in games. He wasn't here last season, so he's not focused on what happened, and he doesn't want any of his teammates to do so either.

"I wouldn't say we're too focused on last year," he admitted. "I think this is a new year, we're all excited for the new guys, the young guys to come together and put something on film and on tape and in front of the fans to be proud of; so that's kind of our goal each and every day, just focus and just get better."

When Moehrig was first brought to Charlotte from the Las Vegas Raiders, it was to tap into that exact versatility, the kind that allowed the Raiders to move Moehrig from deep to the box in 2024, where he had a career high 104 tackles, a sack, two fumble recoveries, and two interceptions while contributing to the run defense.

"When I look at Moehrig, what he can do in a deep part of the field as a coverage player, what he could do close to the line of scrimmage as a run defender, he's very versatile," said defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero about his new DB back in May. "He's certainly an asset for us in our defense, and it's our job to make sure that we get him in positions to utilize his strengths."

Utilizing those strengths has looked different ways thus far. Moehrig has taken snaps as a big nickel and strong safety, working with varying personnel groups as Evero evaluates all of his options.

Regardless of where Moehrig lines up in September, though, he'll be on the field, ready to make the impact he was brought here to make and turn this defense into what it can be.

"It's been smooth, man, since OTAs, it's been a really detailed camp so far, since I've been here," said Moehrig. "So each day I've been learning, each day has been feeling like the defense has been getting smooth and and being steady and, like I said before, we just got to keep our head down, keep grinding each day, and I'm excited what this defense can do."
