Stephon Gilmore will wear jersey No. 9

Stephon Gilmore

CHARLOTTE - Carolina's latest trade acquisition, Stephon Gilmore, officially has a number.

Gilmore will wear No. 9 for the Panthers.

He came to practice for the first time on Wednesday as he works his way back from the inactive/PUP list.

Gilmore wore No. 5 at Rock Hill's South Pointe High and at the University of South Carolina. He was No. 24 in New England and Buffalo.

He joins DJ Moore, Jermaine Carter Jr., Shaq Thompson and Jaycee Horn as players that opted for single digits once the NFL changed its uniform rules this season.

Most recently, No. 9 was worn by former kicker Graham Gano, who coincidentally now plays for Carolina's Week 7 opponent, the New York Giants. Other former No. 9s include quarterbacks Rodney Peete and Matt Lytle.
