CHARLOTTE — Dave Canales will generally try to praise an entire group when he's asked about one person.
And he did that when Derrick Brown's performance against the Jets came up, because it was that good.
But Canales used the word "dominant" to describe it, and he's not wrong.
Brown tied for the team high with seven tackles, and also batted down a three passes, and had 2.0 sacks (of the team's 6.0).
Then as is his custom, Canales mentioned the rest of the defensive rotation, from outside linebackers Nic Scourton, D.J. Wonnum, Princely Umanmielen, Thomas Incoom, and Boogie Basham, along with defensive linemen A'Shawn Robinson, Tershawn Wharton, and Bobby Brown III.

"But I again I attribute that to the whole group," Canales said of Brown's day. "It allows Derrick to play to play across the line of scrimmage in and out of gaps when we're setting hard edges, got to give a lot of props to Nic Scourton, DJ Wonnum, Princely, Boogie Basam got in there and had a couple of reps, even used Thomas on some pass rush stuff, so rotating group of edge players. And then those guys inside, you know, Turk had a couple of nice plays coming off a block, A'Shawn, Bobby Brown, and the whole group together, they're just they're executing the run game plan well together, and then it just finishes with effort.
"And you saw some great effort plays by Derrick, not just in the run game, but also in the pass game, chasing the quarterbacks to minimize some of the scrambles, getting them out of bounds for a 4-yard gain or a 5-yard gain because of the effort to chase them all the way and push them out of bounds. Those are the types of plays that really elevate the whole group, and this is the standard of effort that we're looking for."
Sticking with current RB rotation plan
Canales said he planned to go with the same rotation of running backs.
Chuba Hubbard started the game and took the entire first series, and then Rico Dowdle followed, and the two alternated possessions through the game.
Dowdle finished with 79 yards rushing and 96 scrimmage yards, and Hubbard had 31 rushing yards and 55 from scrimmage.
"I anticipate we'll go the same way," Canales said. "To have both guys, who really I trust and to know that this is Chuba's first came back coming off with a little bit of time off. I fully expect that both guys will continue to give us the confidence to call whatever we need to call, in those situations, and I'm glad that Rico contribute he did.
"But also Chuba has had a couple really nice runs, got a really nice screen play where there was a little bit of confusion in the communication with the line kind of standing out there as statues. There's a little bit of uncertainty of whether there was a go call on the screen or not, but they're kind of keeping that under wraps right now, but I'm glad the outcome is right.
"And so I'm excited to get to go out this week with two backs that I really trust that will run with the type of style that we expect."

Panthers will look at possibly bringing in a QB
With uncertainty surrounding Bryce Young's status, the Panthers are contemplating bringing in another quarterback this week.
"We're looking at that right now," Canales said Monday. "But again, this is all going to kind of determine on the full evaluation to see where we're at with Bryce."
As of now, Young is day-to-day. If he is unable to go, Andy Dalton would start against the Bills and take all the first team snaps in practice this week. Currently, Hendon Hooker is the practice squad passer. He will also be a part of the conversation around what to do with every quarterback position this week, including the backup spot.

"Yeah, Hendon's a guy I'm really excited about. Loved him through the evaluation process coming out of Tennessee," Canales said.
"Spent a couple of years with Detroit getting really good training there, in a system that's very similar to what we do, looking for the right runs to get to, some of the actions, there's some carryover there, and so really looking to build off of that.
"He's done a great job for us, just continuing to gather the impact information, to get himself ready to help us at some point in the meet."
If Canales and general manager Dan Morgan do bring in someone else this week, Canales confirmed he will be "probably more of a backup."

Panthers will re-evaluate Damien Lewis this week
Left guard Damien Lewis was sidelined for Sunday's game against the Jets, but Canales shared on Monday that they tried all the way up until game day to get the starting guard on the field.
"We tried to get him back on Sunday. We took it all the way to game day, tested (his) strength" Canales said.
Lewis was hampered by a shoulder injury that occurred during individual drills last Thursday at practice. He was listed as questionable for the game, but was unable to progress quickly enough to play. Canales told reporters Sunday after the game that the timing was fortuitous given interior lineman Austin Corbett's return from injured reserve. Corbett started the season as the center, before a knee injury in Week 2. Cade Mays took over the role, and given Lewis' injury this week, coaches elected to slot Corbett, a longtime starting guard, into that spot.
"We just couldn't get (Damien's) strength back to a point where we felt safe about playing and putting him out there and You know, the, the beautiful timing of Austin Corbett coming back and you know I got to watch the film, but you know, firs, 1st impression is that Austin did a great job just continuing to allow us to play our style of offense."
As the Panthers prepare to play the Buffalo Bills in Week 8, they will test Lewis this week to see if he could be available on Sunday against a front that includes Ed Oliver, Joey Bosa, and former Panther Shaq Thompson.
"We'll have him in there doing some rehab," said Canales, "and the hope is to get him back out there."
