GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Panthers have shown they can come back. They've shown they can win a shootout. And then they showed they could win on the road.
Sunday, they showed they were capable of a major upset, and playing meaningful football when the weather turns cold against top competition.
The Panthers came to Lambeau Field and left with a win no one expected, beating the Packers 16-13 to improve to 5-4.
Rico Dowdle got the start and ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns, continuing his run of recent success.
But it was rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald who scored the game-winner, hitting a 49-yard field goal with a second left on the clock remaining.
That was his second walk-off of the year, after hitting one against Dallas at home.
But this was Lambeau Field. This was different.
And so are these Panthers.
The Packers entered the game as a significant favorite, which made sense because they had the NFC's best record (5-2-1 now), and a top-10 offense and defense.
But the Panthers matched them throughout, with the kind of defensive bounceback after last week's loss to Buffalo that was reminiscent of the job they did against the Falcons and the Jets. They held the Packers in the red zone, allowing one touchdown, but forcing a turnover, and a couple of field goals, the kind of big steps they needed.
Dave Canales talks about complementary football all the time, and this was it.
Even more offensive line shuffling
The Panthers started the game with their seventh combination of linemen in nine games, and it didn't take long to shuffle the deck again.
Left guard Damien Lewis walked off the field early in the first quarter and was replaced by Jake Curhan. Lewis returned on the next possession, but the stability didn't last long.
Chandler Zavala, starting at right guard in his first week back from injured reserve, left with an elbow injury and didn't return.
That meant Curhan played both guard spots in the first quarter, and the Panthers were thin again.
They dressed eight linemen, with Cade Mays inactive. Taylor Moton was active but the hope was that he wouldn't be needed, since he was limited in practice this week with a knee injury.
