CHARLOTTE — In classic Bryce Young fashion, even when it's about him, he'd prefer it's not about him.
The Panthers quarterback was named NFC offensive player of the week after his 448-yard outburst in the overtime win against the Falcons, which broke Cam Newton's single-game franchise record, among other superlatives.
And with that award, he becomes the fifth Panthers player to win the weekly award this season, the first team in the league to do so. He was preceded in the weekly honors by Rico Dowdle (Week 5), Ryan Fitzgerald (Week 6), Sam Martin (Week 7), and Tre'von Moehrig (Week 9).
The Panthers haven't had five different players of the week in a season since 2017, when the names were Newton, Julius Peppers, Luke Kuechly, Jonathan Stewart, and Damiere Byrd.
"You didn't want me to say it first, but I'm still going to repeat it, individual awards, that's not what I'm after," Young said Sunday after the game when asked about breaking Newton's record. "It doesn't mean anything. I'm grateful that we won; we had the most important stat today, and it was a win. That's all that matters.
"But again, being able to be mentioned with Cam, with a player of that caliber who I have so much respect for, it's definitely an honor."
Of course, it is kind of about Bryce, because his week was that impressive.
In addition to being the most in Panthers history, he's also the only quarterback in the league this year to go over 400 yards with no interceptions.
He's also just the fifth player in league history under the age of 25 with at least 30 completions, 425 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and no interceptions in a game, joining Drew Bledsoe, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes (twice), and C.J. Stroud.
And of course, it was his 10th game-winning drive, the most of any quarterback in the league since he arrived in 2023.
He's also the fifth Panthers quarterback to win the award, joining Steve Beuerlein, Kerry Collins, Jake Delhomme, and Cam Newton (a 10-time winner). He is the first to win since Newton in Week 7, 2018.
Oh, and he did it all with an ankle injury that required him to go to the locker room to get heavily taped, and left him limping significantly after the game.
"Just the resilience, an opportunity to show his teammates that he wants to be out there with those guys to win that game with them," Panthers head coach Dave Canales said of Young's coming back. "And I think if Bryce was up here, he'd tell you first and foremost, whatever it takes to win and just try to find a way to contribute, try to find a way to affect the game, and he certainly was able to do that, getting himself back out there and battling through some stuff to be available for us and and coming up with some big plays when we needed it."
