InsideTheNumbers_Wk12atSF

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Take a look inside some of the key numbers and stats, as well as the snap counts, from the Panthers' 20-9 loss at San Francisco Monday night.

  • Linebacker Krys Barnes, in his first start for the Panthers this season, finished with a game-high 10 tackles.
  • The Panthers had three interceptions in the first half, marking the first time the team has recorded three in a half since Oct. 13, 2019 at Tampa Bay.
  • Cornerback Jaycee Horn had two interceptions alone in the first half, the second multi-interception game of his career. The first game earlier this year against the Jets in Week 7.
  • Horn currently leads the Panthers with five interceptions.
  • Cornerback Mike Jackson also had an interception in the first half.
  • Quarterback Bryce Young completed 18-of-29 passes (62.1 percent) for 169 yards and his career-high-tying 15th touchdown of the season. He becomes the fourth Carolina quarterback to record at least 15 touchdown passes in consecutive seasons, joining Steve Beuerlein, Jake Delhomme and Cam Newton.
  • Rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan finished with two receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown. McMillan ranks third in team history for the most catches by a rookie with 56 and most receiving yards by a rookie with 783.
  • He is tied for second in team history for the most receiving touchdowns by a rookie with five and becomes the fifth Carolina rookie with five touchdown receptions.
  • Running back Rico Dowdle led the team 74 scrimmage yards (38 rushing, 36 receiving), his sixth game this season with at least 70 scrimmage yards. He now has 1,104 scrimmage yards this season.
  • Dowdle is the fourth Carolina running back with over 1,100 scrimmage yards in the first 12 games of a season (Stephen Davis in 2003), Christian McCaffrey in 2018 and 2019 and DeAngelo Williams in 2009).
  • The offense ran only 43 plays, which was tied for the second-fewest plays in team history.
  • According to Next Gen Stats, against man coverage, Young completed just 2-of-7 passes for 11 yards and both of his interceptions, with the 49ers sending a blitz on 7-of-8 dropbacks on which they played man. They blitzed on 4-of-6 dropbacks on third down, holding Young to one completion on three attempts for -3 yards, and recorded two interceptions on their early down blitzes despite sending them at just a 21.4 percent rate.

Snap Counts

Take a look at the snap counts and playtime percentage for the Panthers in Week 12 of the regular season against the 49ers.

Player Offensive Snaps Special Teams Snaps
Damien Lewis 46 (100%) 3 (15%)
Ikem Ekwonu 46 (100%) 3 (15%)
Taylor Moton 46 (100%) 3 (15%)
Austin Corbett 46 (100%) 2 (10%)
Bryce Young 46 (100%)
Tetairoa McMillan 42 (91%)
Jalen Coker 38 (83%)
Xavier Legette 31 (67%)
Rico Dowdle 30 (65%)
Ja'Tavion Sanders 26 (57%) 12 (60%)
Jake Curhan 26 (57%) 3 (15%)
Tommy Tremble 22 (48%) 5 (25%)
Chandler Zavala 21 (46%) 1 (5%)
Chuba Hubbard 16 (35%)
Mitchell Evans 10 (22%) 5 (25%)
Jimmy Horn 10 (22%)
Brycen Tremayne 4 (9%) 13 (65%)
  • For starters, 46 snaps for offensive starters (including penalties) isn't enough snaps. But that's what happens when you're 1-of-7 on third downs.
  • The running backs didn't get enough work (just nine carries between them), so the sample size could be misleading. But the margins are beginning to narrow. Rico Dowdle had 82 percent of the snaps last week, and Chuba Hubbard had 19 percent. This week, Dowdle had 65 to Hubbard's 35. Again, until they each get more carries, it's hard to know how much it means, but it is worth monitoring.
  • There was also a flip of tight end snaps, with Ja'Tavion Sanders getting the most of the lot (57 percent), followed by Tommy Tremble's 48 percent and Mitchell Evans getting significantly fewer (22 percent).
Player Defensive Snaps Special Teams Snaps
Mike Jackson 70 (100%) 4 (20%)
Nick Scott 70 (100%) 4 (20%)
Tre'von Moehrig 70 (100%)
Krys Barnes 69 (99%) 4 (20%)
Tershawn Wharton 58 (83%)
Derrick Brown 51 (73%) 4 (20%)
Nic Scourton 48 (69%) 4 (20%)
DJ Wonnum 45 (64%)
A'Shawn Robinson 39 (56%) 4 (20%)
Jaycee Horn 38 (54%)
Bam Martin-Scott 32 (46%) 10 (50%)
Corey Thornton 32 (46%)
Claudin Cherelus 28 (40%) 1 (5%)
Chau Smith-Wade 24 (34%) 8 (40%)
Lathan Ransom 24 (34%) 8 (40%)
Trevis Gipson 20 (29%) 12 (60%)
Princely Umanmielen 19 (29%) 11 (37%)
LaBryan Ray 17 (24%)
Bobby Brown III 15 (21%) 4 (20%)
Princely Umanmielen 14 (20%) 4 (20%)
Akayleb Evans 6 (9%) 8 (40%)
  • Krys Barnes would need to be on the 53-man roster to play again after using his third practice squad elevation. He may be a need now, after playing 69 of the 70 snaps and posting a team-high 10 tackles.
  • After losing some of his work to rookie Corey Thornton last week by decision, Chau Smith-Wade was back on the field more this week when Thornton was injured, back playing outside again after spending most of his two NFL seasons in the slot. Depending on the severity of Thornton's injury (and he left the locker room on crutches), he could be back up to big numbers.
  • Rookie Bam Martin-Scott played 32 snaps of defense out of necessity when Claudin Cherelus was injured, and had some moments. The rookie from South Carolina hadn't played on defense this season, with 175 snaps of special teams his only work.
Player Special Teams Snaps
Thomas Incoom 17 (85%)
DeeJay Dallas 16 (80%)
Demani Richardson 13 (65%)
Maema Njongmeta 13 (65%)
JJ Jansen 7 (35%)
Sam Martin 7 (35%)
Trevor Etienne 6 (30%)
Ryan Fitzgerald 6 (30%)
Yosh Nijman 3 (15%)
Nick Samac 3 (15%)
  • DeeJay Dallas was a practice squad call-up and played a heavy special teams load (80 percent of the snaps). That included being the second back on kickoff returns with Trevor Etienne, replacing Hubbard, which is another sign the former starter might be getting more involved in the run game.
  • Speaking of Etienne, he only played on kickoff returns. And when there are only nine carries on offense for backs, there's not much room for the third one.
