CHARLOTTE — Jimmy Horn Jr. took a moment to enjoy the roar of the crowd when he ran onto the field Saturday night for Fan Fest, before locking in for the scrimmage.
"I feel like it's really when you first walk out and you see all the fans and stuff like that," Horn said following the practice under the lights and 40,000-plus fans. "But once you're in that field, well, once I'm on the field, it's like it's another switch that activates. I just be locked in and try to block out all the noise and just focus on what's in front of me, not what's on the outside of me."
He took a moment to enjoy it again after he scored his first touchdown, a short yardage play-action throw from Andy Dalton as he waltzed into the front corner of the end zone.
"It was just a good call by coach; he dialed it up and we had a great drive and everything just worked in the flow, in the favor that it worked in," he added.

And again on his second, wide open in the end zone from Dalton. But while the appreciation and gratification were nice, as far as the rookie receiver is concerned, it's far from warranted; at least not yet.
"I celebrate the moments on the back end when I'm just vibing by myself, you know, just appreciating everything that God allowed me to do in this life," Horn admitted. "I celebrate the moments and I pray about it. But on the field wise, like I haven't played in no real NFL game yet. I still haven't accomplished any goals or anything."
Right now, the sixth-round receiver out of Colorado is working towards the goals, though, with tangible markers throughout training camp, and the initial results of which have been on display this week in camp and again Saturday night.
"I think it's the energy he plays with," said coach Dave Canales. "He doesn't quit on routes, he continues after the normal part of the protection he can count on, he continues to find space and play fast, and, it's a credit to his fitness, but it's also a credit to just the energy that he puts out there, that you want to throw to him."

Added receiver Adam Thielen, "I think he's just starting to get comfortable with the offense. I think he's a guy that has all the ability to play at a high level, and I think as we start to see him get comfortable with the offense, you know, he hasn't been here that long, right? So, as he starts to kind of understand the big picture of this offense, you see him start to make more and more plays.
"So, that's fun to see and is why you kind of give guys more time when they're young players just to kind of feel the offense before you evaluate what they can do."
As Horn has become more and more comfortable with the offense, his route running has stood out, like it did during Fan Fest on the scoring plays. So much of the excitement around Horn is his blazing speed (he ran a 4.38 according to some clocks at his Pro Day), but he knows that only beats coverage in the NFL so many times.
"I take pride in route-running, man, cause that's the number one thing as a receiver, being able to create space to get open," shared Horn, before thanking his offseason trainers for helping him learn to control his speed.
"They helped me out on a lot throughout the process of learning the real depth of running routes and stuff like that. I always been a fast guy. They teach me tempo, teach me how to control my speed and run at a good pace, not only just being fast, but being able to create separation and being able to stop on the down with my speed, which makes me even more dangerous."
With every highlight-worthy play that Horn makes during camp—and especially now after pulling in the two touchdowns in front of thousands of fans—the hype continues to grow around the man his Colorado coach Deion Sanders called his favorite son. Horn hears it; he knows the lore is growing. But just like he isn't quite ready to acknowledge the cheers after big plays, he's cautiously approaching the hype.
"I've seen it, but I try not to feed into it," Horn said. "I appreciate all the hype and stuff, but I feel still like I haven't done anything yet, so I just want to go out there and continue to prove myself every day and become a consistent player."
"Once I accomplish goals and we win as a team and stuff like that, it's going to feel good."
