Know Your Foe: Los Angeles Rams

CHARLOTTE — The Los Angeles Rams (9-2) helped out the Carolina Panthers (6-6) on Sunday night, defeating NFC South foe, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34-7, helping the Panthers stay close in the division, something that was needed after falling 20-9 to the 49ers on Monday night.

Now, the Rams turn their sights to the Panthers directly. The two will face off this Sunday in Charlotte, as Carolina continues to work their way through a gauntlet of NFC West and South opponents. The Rams have won six in a row and are now the top-seeded team in the NFC.

The Panthers are 13-10 all-time against the Rams. Carolina is 6-5 at home and 7-5 on the road at the Rams, including a playoff win in 2003 (Steve Smith's double-overtime walk-off touchdown).

Matthew Stafford playing some of his best

Matthew Stafford might be in his 17th year in the league, but he's showing no signs of slowing down. The Super Bowl-winning quarterback is fifth in the league in passing with 2,830 yards and a 66.5 completion percentage. He's thrown 30 touchdowns to only two interceptions, an insane ratio that, unsurprisingly, leads the league. His touchdown passes also lead the league by a margin of seven (Dak Prescott has 23).

Stafford has seen it all in the league, and very little surprises him. He stays in the pocket a lot, and he's only scrambled 0.8 percent of the time. But he doesn't have to, since he's getting the ball out quickly, with an average of 2.74 seconds.

Davante Adams back to keeping defenses in fits (and so is Puka Nacua)

One of the reasons Stafford has been able to thrive this season is because of Davante Adams. The Rams already had a top young receiver in Puka Nacua, who is still third in the league in total receiving yardage (947 yards), thanks to a front-heavy performance in the year. And Nacua is still a huge threat to stretch the field, with 13 receptions of 15-plus yards, including a 39-yard touchdown.

It's Adams, though, who has become a go-to option in the red zone. His 12 touchdowns this season lead all receivers. Against the Bucs on Sunday Night Football, Adams caught five of his eight targets for 62 yards and two touchdowns, and 61 of his 62 yards came against single-high coverage, while one reception, a fade for a touchdown, came against Cover 0 on the 1-yard line.

Like Stafford, Adams has been in the league for years—this is his 12th season—and little surprises him. He is widely considered to have some of the best releases off the line of scrimmage as well, making him a technical magician and an interesting challenge for corners.

Rams' defense is singing a harmonious tune

As if the Rams offense wasn't potent enough, they're helped by a stifling defense. The group as a whole is ninth in the league, allowing an average of 311.2 yards per game. The passing defense is middle of the league (208.5 yards per game), and the run defense is keeping things shut down, allowing only 102.7 yards per game on the ground.

The group is the epitome of bend but don't break, allowing the fourth-fewest explosives overall in the league, and posting the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL, only giving up an average of 16.3 points per game.

The defense has gotten after opposing quarterbacks with 31 sacks, led by Byron Young with 9.0 total. Jared Verse has added 6.0 sacks of his own and posted 20 QB hits. Against the Bucs, Verse tied his season-high six pressures, leading all Rams defenders in Week 12.

Verse spent 8.7 seconds pressuring Tampa Bay's quarterbacks, the most in a single game in his career.
