Xavier Legette apologizes again for fight and ejection from preseason game

CHARLOTTE — Xavier Legette knew right away he'd messed up.

As teammates pulled him away from Browns safety Rayshawn Jenkins after the two got into a fight during Friday's preseason game, the second-year receiver immediately recognized where he'd gone wrong.

"It was just a little something that had happened," Legette explained Monday, adding it was "something like" emotions got the best of him.

Legette apologized for the occurrence that led to his ejection on Friday night, following the Panthers' training camp practice on Monday. He was forced to watch the rest of Friday night's preseason game from the locker room, where he tweeted an initial apology.

"It was just something I shouldn't have did. That's not supposed to happen in a football game, and I just feel like I owed the fans an apology," said Legette. "I wasn't in disbelief; I knew what was going on. But it ain't supposed to happen."

Coach Dave Canales spoke to Legette after the game and said the former first-rounder took responsibility.

"He bounced back quickly," said Canales. "We had a great conversation afterwards. He knows, you know, he wasn't defensive about it. He's like, 'I got to be better, ' and, you know, kind of just moved on, and he was ready to work today."

It almost meant he was fresh for Monday's practice.

"I mean, he's got fresh legs," joked Canales. "I think he only played that (one) drive and so of all the guys, probably the freshest coming out there."

Legette said the fight was not precipitated by anything Jenkins said during the play, or even anything he did during joint practice on Wednesday, when Jenkins had a jawing moment with Chuba Hubbard. Instead, Legette said it happened due to the physical nature that carried on after the whistle, and for a reason that would stay between him and Jenkins.

"He ain't say nothing. We ain't have no exchanging of words," explained Legette. "It's just something happened."

The fact Legette threw a punch (thus causing the ejection) means a fine from the league is also likely coming. While the news or the amount hasn't been delivered yet, the receiver is waiting for what he knows is coming.

"I ain't had nothing yet, but I'm looking for it," Legette admitted.

And next time, knowing the fine and the retribution could be waiting, Xavier Legette said he'll handle the situation differently.

"I won't put a finger up (next time)," promised Legette. "Just keep the main thing, the main thing. I know I ain't supposed to do what I did."
