When Xavier Legette met Josh Norman, they talked more than football

CHARLOTTE — When Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette started riding Dolla Bill to commemorate touchdowns last season, there were probably a lot of fans who thought that was a new thing.

Of course, he was only 10 years removed from being the first grand equine celebration in Panthers history, as former cornerback Josh Norman was saddling up his horse Delta for big plays a decade ago.

"You've got to understand there's a lot of fair-weathers," Norman said with a laugh when asked if people had forgotten about him and his horse, which took off in the opener against Jacksonville in 2015, the first win of 15 in the regular season. "I'm sure a lot of people remember, though, because that happened multiple times."

Norman had four interceptions that year, returning two for touchdowns, leading to All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. He was also fourth in the voting for defensive player of the year, trailing only a few guys named JJ Watt, Aaron Donald, and his teammate Luke Kuechly.

So when he was here earlier this summer, he was eager to catch up with Legette for a little horse talk, among other things.

The two have plenty in common, from their love of riding to their South Carolina roots.

Norman was born in Greenwood and was starring at Coastal Carolina in Conway when Legette was growing up in Mullins, about a half-hour up the road.

But the two had never met until Norman came out to watch practice, and when they caught up, they realized how closely their paths had come without intersecting.

"It's wild that this was the first time I met X, man, that's kind of crazy," Norman said. "But I've seen the clips, and I've seen him on that horse, so I know what he can do."

The two would have made quite the matchup back in the day, a couple of physical presences on the perimeter.

And when Legette was talking about the former Panthers cornerback, the first thing he recalled was Norman's legendary battles with Giants wideout Odell Beckham, which turned into a brawl vaguely resembling football.

They were in each other's business from pregame all the way through, with five personal fouls between them (Beckham three, Norman two). Beckham eventually launched himself at Norman, earning a one-game suspension from the league. Norman was fined $26,044 for grabbing Beckham's facemark and "striking the Giants receiver in the head and neck areas."

Beckham caught six passes for 76 yards and a touchdown that day, the Panthers took a 38-35 win on the road that moved them to 14-0.

Josh Norman

Legette laughed as he recalled that incident, which quickly became part of the lore of the 2015 team.

"I watched him combatting with Odell Beckham back in the day, seemed like he was pretty aggressive to me," Legette said of Norman. "If it was up to me to guess about him, man, he's from South Carolina, so I know he got something to him. I mean, him and Odell got after it. It was hot."

But that wasn't the extent of their conversation, of course, of course, as the two most famous riders in team history got to know each other a little better, respecting each other's roots and celebration styles.

Josh Norman was originally drafted by Carolina in the fifth round in 2012. He played four seasons (2012-15) with the Panthers, earning All-Pro honors during the team's Super Bowl run in 2015. Norman then played for Washington (2016-19), Buffalo (2020) and San Francisco (2021).
