CHARLOTTE— Take a look inside some of the key numbers and stats, as well as the snap counts, from the Panthers' 17-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
- Outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum finished with a season high six tackles. It is the most tackles Wonnum has had in a game since Week 10 of last season.
- Defensive tackle Derrick Brown finished with a season-high nine tackles. He now has 288, and passed Kawann Short (280) for fourth on the Panthers' all-time tackles by defensive linemen list.
- Safety Tre'von Moehrig entered the week leading all safeties with eight tackles for loss and recorded seven tackles and one tackle for loss today. It marks his fourth game this season with at least seven tackles.
- Linebacker Trevin Wallace had his second sack of the year, an 8-yard loss, on the first Saints' passing play of the game.
- Rookie OLB Nic Scourton sacked Saints' quarterback Tyler Shough during the fourth-quarter, bringing his season total to 3.0 sacks. He is tied for a team high.
- Scourton becomes the third Carolina rookie linebacker with at least three sacks, joining Brian Burns (7.5 in 2019) and Thomas Keiser (4.0 in 2011). Scourton has recorded at least half a sack in three of the last four games.
- Running back Rico Dowdle produced 53 yards rushing and one touchdown on 18 attempts, scoring on a 5-yard run to cap opening drive of the game.
- Dowdle leads the team in rushing with 788 yards and 5 touchdowns on 149 attempts. He is third in the entire NFL and first in the NFC in total yardage.
- Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan finished with 60 yards on five receptions. McMillan is the Panthers top receiver with 46 receptions for 618 yards and two touchdowns.
- McMillan is in the Top 13 of the league in total receiving (with the Monday night game still to play) and has the second most yards of any rookie thus far this season, trailing on Bucs' Emuka Egbuka (677 yards).
- His six games with at least 60 receiving yards are the second most by a Carolina rookie in franchise history, behind only WR Kelvin Benjamin (eight in 2014).
- McMillan also now has five games with at least five receptions, surpassing WR D.J. Moore (four games in 2018) for the third-most by a Carolina rookie. Only RB Christian McCaffrey (10 in 2017) and Kelvin Benjamin (eight in 2014) have more.
- McMillan has 618 receiving yards this season, becoming the fifth Carolina rookie to surpass 600 receiving yards.
- RB Chuba Hubbard had three rushes for 14 yards on Sunday, bringing his career total to 3,488 yards. This makes Hubbard the NFL's all-time rushing leader for Canadian-born players. He surpassed Rueben Mayes (1986-1993) with 3,484 rushing yards.
- The Panthers were penalized one time for 5 yards on Sunday. This equaled the second-fewest penalties and third-fewest penalty yards in team history. The Panthers have the fourth-fewest penalties in the NFL through Week 10.
- The Panthers continued their streak of not allowing an opposing offensive touchdown in the first quarter in each of their 10 games this season. They are one of two teams in the NFL (Green Bay) to not allow an opposing offensive touchdown in the opening quarter this season.
Snap Counts
Take a look at the snap counts and playtime percentage for the Panthers in Week 10 of the regular season against the Saints.
| Player | Offensive Snaps | Special Teams Snaps |
|---|---|---|
| Austin Corbett | 53 (100%) | 2 (11%) |
| Damien Lewis | 53 (100%) | 2 (11%) |
| Ikem Ekwonu | 53 (100%) | 2 (11%) |
| Taylor Moton | 53 (100%) | 2 (11%) |
| Bryce Young | 53 (100%) | |
| Cade Mays | 53 (100%) | |
| Tetairoa McMillan | 48 (91%) | |
| Rico Dowdle | 42 (79%) | |
| Jalen Coker | 40 (75%) | |
| Xavier Legette | 37 (70%) | |
| Tommy Tremble | 36 (68%) | 4 (21%) |
| Ja'Tavion Sanders | 19 (36%) | 10 (53%) |
| Mitchell Evans | 17 (32%) | 4 (21%) |
| Chuba Hubbard | 11 (21%) | 4 (21%) |
| Jimmy Horn | 11 (21%) | |
| Dan Chisena | 4 (8%) | 9 (47%) |
- Other than the offensive line playing every snap together (a welcome departure from in-game injuries), the snap count percentages were practically identical to last week's win at Green Bay. There's a lesson there (it's a week-to-week league and things can change in a hurry).
- Their three wide receivers played at least 70 percent of the snaps each (Tetairoa McMillan 91, Jalen Coker 75, Xavier Legette 70), which speaks to Rico Dowdle's contention that even when they tried to spread the field more, the Saints kept bringing big bodies and pressure rather than matching. When that happens, the passing game has to make more plays.
- Rookie tight end Mitchell Evans went down with an ankle injury that had players from both sides kneeling around him. He then came back and played a relatively similar amount to last week in Green Bay. Like Princely Umanmielen on the other side, they have some rookies who love to play and are pushing to stay out there.
| Player | Defensive Snaps | Special Teams Snaps |
|---|---|---|
| Mike Jackson | 68 (100%) | 4 (21%) |
| Jaycee Horn | 68 (100%) | |
| Tre'von Moehrig | 68 (100%) | |
| Nick Scott | 67 (99%) | 4 (21%) |
| Tershawn Wharton | 56 (82%) | |
| Nic Scourton | 54 (79%) | 4 (21%) |
| DJ Wonnum | 52 (76%) | |
| Christian Rozeboom | 51 (75%) | 4 (21%) |
| Derrick Brown | 50 (74%) | 4 (21%) |
| A'Shawn Robinson | 45 (66%) | 4 (21%) |
| Trevin Wallace | 41 (60%) | |
| Chau Smith-Wade | 31 (46%) | 7 (37%) |
| Claudin Cherelus | 24 (35%) | 17 (89%) |
| Lathan Ransom | 20 (29%) | 9 (47%) |
| Princely Umanmielen | 15 (22%) | 2 (11%) |
| Trevis Gipson | 14 (21%) | 11 (58%) |
| Bobby Brown III | 11 (16%) | 4 (21%) |
| LaBryan Ray | 11 (16%) | |
| Thomas Incoom | 1 (1%) | 17 (89%) |
| Corey Thornton | 1 (1%) | 5 (26%) |
- With Tershawn Wharton healthy again and playing a lot of snaps (56 total, 82 percent), it opens up a lot of things up front. Having a penetrator like him (7 tackles and one for loss) next to Derrick Brown is a big difference from years past.
- When Trevin Wallace left with a shoulder injury, Claudin Cherelus stepped in and played 24 professional snaps (35 percent) of defense while maintaining his usual full load of special teams work (89 percent).
- Special teamer Thomas Incoom and rookie cornerback Corey Thornton got a single snap of defense each.
| Player | Special Teams Snaps |
|---|---|
| Maema Njongmeta | 13 (68%) |
| Bam Martin-Scott | 12 (63%) |
| Akayleb Evans | 9 (47%) |
| Demani Richardson | 9 (47%) |
| Trevor Etienne | 8 (42%) |
| JJ Jansen | 6 (32%) |
| Sam Martin | 6 (32%) |
| Ryan Fitzgerald | 4 (21%) |
| Nick Samac | 2 (11%) |
| Jake Curhan | 2 (11%) |
| Yosh Nijman | 2 (11%) |
- The special teams list was thinned out this week, with Cherelus and Incoom playing defense, and special teams call-up Dan Chisena getting some work on offense.
- The other big difference this week was Trevor Etienne only getting special teams snaps and no offense. With the way the Saints were selling out to stop the run, there wasn't a lot to work with for a third back.
- And with the offensive line staying intact this week, the reserve blockers (including Nick Samac, Jake Curhan, and Yosh Nijman) only got two snaps of field goal/extra point blocking.
