CHARLOTTE — Before Panthers head coach Dave Canales could even get to the locker room last Sunday after the loss to the Seahawks, quarterback Bryce Young was already ahead of him, telling players to flush it and get ready for the Buccaneers this week.
That tracks for Young, because that's one of his strengths as a player — and as a human being — is his ability to compartmentalize.
By being so focused on the right now, a lot of the conversations happening outside Bank of America Stadium take place without him or his knowledge.
Someone asked him Tuesday about the Falcons winning Monday night to set up the chaos scenario in which the Panthers could make the playoffs even with a loss at Tampa, and Young made a face, furrowing his brow in a momentary flash of confusion, before he flushed it and moved on to the point he was trying to make.
"I didn't know that or know what that is," Young said of the three-way tie scenario, and that is unquestionably the truth if you've been paying attention to him for the last three years.
So when thinking about the team's ability to alternate results for 10 weeks in a row now, or his own ability to put both good games and bad games behind him, it's not a surprise.
Young's performance has also shown a certain resilience, like a 448-yard, three-touchdown day against the Falcons that followed a 124-yard, one-interception day against the Saints. So the fact that he threw for 54 yards against the Seahawks last week doesn't make him blink.

He was asked on Tuesday if it's easier to flush a 300-yard game or a 150, and he just laughed.
"You're not going to like the answer," he replied with a grin, though questions are value-neutral and make no judgments on their own, they are merely vehicles for responses. "But it's really not any different. Again, good and bad come with sports, and I think that's the maturity you have to have at this level. Coaches challenge us with it, and you really have to take it to heart, good or bad, you feel like things went well or didn't, you have to flush it the same way. You have to have the same approach. So, I've been trying to do that for a while now, so, at this point, it's the same."
His father, Craig, is a mental health professional who has taught him this way since long before he was an NFL quarterback, so all of this seems natural to him — because it has become who he is.
If he was ever tempted to do something halfway or dwell too long on a previous result, there were reminders. "And then you just get more reps at it as you get older," he said with a shrug.

That's one of those things that's easier to say than do, and Young's ability to keep all the inputs in their appropriate box has allowed him to keep things in perspective over the course of a long season.
Canales said that serves him well, and that the perspective isn't just game-to-game, it's play-to-play.
"It's something that gives Bryce the ability in the flow of the game, what I've noticed about Bryce is he doesn't get hung up on things that happen, he moves on, and that's a really special trait to have," Canales said. "It's really important for the big picture, especially when you're standing in front of the group, that this drive is going to be a touchdown drive, this next play is going to be a big one.
"To have that kind of salesmanship, it's really important for the quarterback to have that, and I see Bryce just step into the huddle with confidence every single play as if this is the best play that coach has ever called, you know, and, and it's great to have that support, but it does give the guys a lot of confidence going into it."
For veteran offensive lineman Austin Corbett, it's not something he thinks of Young trying to sell; that's just what he sounds like.
"It's just the confidence in how he speaks," Corbett said. "You can understand he's speaking from a place of confidence, from a place of preparation, and that is able to pick up other guys. Other guys are able to pick up on that, and it just leads to a more productive huddle, more productive mindset when you're able to kind of bring guys along with you in how you talk.
"I think it's just that quarterback mentality of, I'm at the helm for a reason, and I have to control it, I have to lead it, and that's what it is. We're going to keep moving. We're going to keep going forward, whatever happens, good, bad, indifferent; it doesn't matter. We're going to keep going, and to be able to own that and to be able to do it and speak it is a skill for sure."

So anticipating Young to know tiebreakers, or have opinions on things not the thing in front of him, that's just not knowing your personnel. It's all about the moment for Young, whether that's the meeting he's about to walk into, or a young fan handing him a sombrero after practice.
Dealing with the situation at hand is what he does.
"Focus on the Bucs," he replied a half-dozen or so times during his weekly press conference. "Go 1-0 this week," was the other standard reply.
That doesn't mean he doesn't understand the importance of this moment, for a team trying to secure its first winning record since 2017, and its first division title and home playoff game since 2015.
"I mean, I'm always excited," he deadpanned. "I'm super grateful for the opportunity. Anytime you get to play football, it's a blessing, obviously. Being able to play for what we're playing for, that means a lot, of course. I'm proud of this group for being here; we're excited for the opportunity.
"But, at the end of the day, it's football right now. It's Tuesday, so Wednesday for our normal schedule, so we're focused on what normal Wednesdays look like, making sure that we can maximize all that. Coach talks about being process-oriented all the time, so pushing all that to the side, it's just about having the best week we can right now."
